Position Overview
The summer 2024 Marquette University Project GO Arabic program is a special initiative of the Project Global Officer (Project GO) is a Department of Defense offering students the opportunity for intensive Arabic language study. The Arabic Cultural and Language Assistant Instructor will assist the Arabic Professor with the teaching the pre-program and the provide on-site academic and student support of the program in Oman. The assistant will work under the direction of the Arabic Professor and Director of International Education.
The Arabic Cultural and Language Assistant Instructor will assist the Arabic Professor with the language intensive Arabic pre-program and serve as the Marquette University on-site representative for four weeks of the program. The Arabic Cultural and Language Assistant Instructor will manage weekly cultural assessments, provide tutoring and expert advice, and enrich students’ learning by adding a contemporary linguistic and cultural dimension for students. They will also provide on-site support during the program in Oman, serving as a contact for participants with health and safety or cultural adjustment concerns.
The Arabic Cultural and Language Assistant Instructor will be a fluent Arabic speaker, excellent communicator, and team player. They should be committed to helping students develop their oral fluency throughout the program and be prepared to support beginner students of Arabic in their preparation for the final OPIc test.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Work with the Academic Director during the intensive language pre-program as an assistant instructor to help students master practice session techniques.
2. Confer with the Academic Director during the intensive language pre-program to determine the scope and pace of material to be covered.
3. Conduct sessions for students to practice and use the materials they have studied.
4. Provide prompt feedback by correcting student responses during the intensive language pre-program.
5. Provide students with an accurate model of the language and speaking at a natural pace.
6. Lead breakout groups and maintaining records of student performance to submit to the Academic Director during the intensive language pre-program.
7. During the on-site program, conduct weekly check-ins with all the students.
8. During the on-site program, provide tutoring to students as needed.
9. During the on-site program, conduct weekly cultural assessment (IDI) review of prompts and meetings with students, when necessary.
10. During the on-site program, serve as the on-site contact for participants with health and safety or cultural adjustment situations/concerns and following up with Noor Majan and Marquette OIE staff when appropriate.
11. Refrain from engaging in conversations of any personal matter, including discussions of personal political opinions
12. Maintain a supportive learning environment that will encourage students to use Arabic comfortably and not feel in any way intimidated
13. maintain a professional working relationship with student participants
14. Inform the Academic Director of any issues arising during the program
15. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Master’s degree in Arabic or in another related subject.
Native-level fluency in Arabic. Excellent written skills and grammar in Arabic. Current affairs especially linked to Arabic-speaking countries.
Microsoft Office, Skype, and Zoom.
Ability to work in a team-oriented manner to meet the overall goals of the program (language acquisition). Punctuality and ability to meet deadlines. Self-motivation in working with student(s).
Travel to and live in Oman for four weeks.
Remain on-site and available for students in Oman during four weeks from June 9 – July 10.
Must be a U.S. Citizen
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
PhD in Arabic.
Familiarity with standardized tests such as OPIc.
Experience performing administrative tasks in a university’s academic program.
Familiarity with on-line Arabic language courses.
Working with students from low-income/first generation and/or underrepresented populations, as well as students with disabilities.
