Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Admissions, the Application Review Specialists (ARS) will review, analyze, and summarize detailed applicant information for the Committee on Admissions (COA) at Washington University School of Medicine.
The ARS will be an integral part of the Admissions process for the MD and MD/PhD programs at the Washington University School of Medicine. ARS ensure that every application we receive undergoes initial review according to our program’s guidelines. ARS have two primary responsibilities: reviewing application files and evaluating these files using a rubric.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Attend training sessions in June and early July, and be available to review applications from July through December (August, September, and October are the busiest months).
- Assess applications for completeness. Flag incomplete files so that problems can be resolved.
- Evaluate application files of prospective first-year medical students using a holistic process and rubric approved by the COA.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times. The contents of an application must not be discussed with any person other than Admissions leadership.
- Work independently and efficiently, following required timelines.
Applicant Special Instructions
In an effort to avoid potential conflicts of interest, specialists may not be a current or prospective medical school applicant or have a close personal relationship with one (e.g., immediate relative, significant other). Current medical students cannot be considered. Additionally, specialists may not be currently employed in a medical school admissions-related role, nor work in any capacity (independently or with an organization) that provides individual or personal medical school admissions counseling.
Working Conditions
- Position is located in a typical office environment working with a computer.
- Work is spent sitting at a workstation.
- Overtime is required throughout the year based on office needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Prior experience reviewing applications for admission (at any level, including K-12, college, and graduate or professional school) and/or employment.
- Prior experience with holistic and/or selective admissions practices.
- Excellent time management, critical thinking, reading comprehension, analysis, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to become competent with the technology used in the application review process.
- Agreement to, and observance of, Federal, University and Admissions policies governing confidentiality and conflict of interest.
- Expertise with Excel, MS Word and PowerPoint.
- Flexibility.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
- Ability to be able to effectively prioritize multiple projects, in a high-paced environment.
- Organizational and written/oral communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external constituents including students, faculty, administrators, parents, alumni, vendors and others.
- Ability to maintain and manage confidential and sensitive information.
- Warm, pleasant, professional and outgoing personality.
- Superior attendance.
- Understanding of the importance of accurate data capturing and record keeping to contribute to the overall success of Admissions.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Must have attention to detail.
- Must be able to balance many tasks at one time.
- Must be a team player and work with a positive attitude who is willing to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, changing environment.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent high school certification and two years’ relevant experience.

G06-H
Salary Range
$17.52 - $26.27 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
