Summary

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan has a need for a Data Analyst.  The candidate will be a member of Dr. Elham Mahmoudi's (PI) research team at the Department of Family Medicine and will report directly to her. The candidate will work on a 5-year National Institute of Health (NIH)-funded mixed methods project "Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Health Care and Challenges in Insurance Plan Choices among Older People with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia: A Mixed Methods Study of Medicare Options." Other data projects may include: public administrative claims (e.g.,Medicare), private administrative claims (e.g., Truven MarketScan), clinical registries and survey datasets (e.g., Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, Health and Retirement Study), and electronic medical records.

The ideal candidate will work independently and efficiently. The candidate must understand both database management and research complexities and have the ability to readily apply problem-solving techniques. This is a unique opportunity to gain exposure to a wide range of data sources and methods.

Responsibilities*

Database design

  • Conceptualize and develop complex programs using appropriate tools and software.
  • Define system objectives and prepare systems design specifications to meet the requirements of each proposed statistical analysis.
  • Investigate available hardware and software configurations and capabilities; recommend optimal system to meet applications objectives.
  • Develop programming and documentation standards.
  • Develop data quality-assurance and validation procedures to ensure the accuracy.
  • Modify existing programs and debug malfunctions in a systematic manner.

Creation of analytical files

  • Implement complex programming tasks to clean, manage and merge healthcare data into datasets ready for statistical analyses.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation for all analytical cohorts.
  • Implement programmatic methods to ensure data quality and efficiency.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience. 
  • At least 5  years of systems analysis/programming in a business environment.
  • Experience with real world healthcare claims data, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, MarketScan, Optum, Medicaid and/or Electronic Medical Record databases
  • Knowledge and experience working with International Classification Diagnosis and Procedures (Version 9 and Version 10)
  • Knowledge and experience working with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS)
  • Strong communication and documentation skills for describing issues with data and potential remedies.
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and efficiently work on multiple projects at the same time.
  • Ability to be consistently detail-oriented.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
