Job Summary

Under supervision and direction of the Instructional Support Supervisor and Lab Animal Coordinator (ISSLAC), Gourley Clinical Teaching Center (GCTC) Staff Veterinarian, GCTC Manager, and SVM faculty course leaders, coordinate activities to facilitate and provide instructional support for the didactic and clinical teaching activities within the School of Veterinary Medicine.
Serve as the Instructional Support Facilitator (ISF) Team Lead to provide coordination and oversight of ISF staff activities, roles, and responsibilities.
Serve as the ISF Patient Care Coordinator for small animal surgical courses within the curriculum. Collaborate with the GCTC Staff Veterinarian and Curricular Support Team to provide transport, patient care, lab coordination, support, and instruction for said labs.
Responsible for fulfilling any operational needs for laboratory courses hosted by the GCTC, followed by complete cleanup and disinfection of used spaces, equipment, and supplies.
Provide oversight and stewardship of departmental resources (facility, equipment, supplies, staff, animal-live and cadaver) in compliance with departmental/campus/state regulations, standards and procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must work in an environment where animals are used in teaching and research. Contact with animals, including the restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) is required. Maneuver and move animals or materials/equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on and off gurneys, into and out of cages, stalls and holding pens, and transfer heavy equipment from one area to another. Walk and/or control large or unruly dogs, horses and livestock.
  • Stand for extended periods of time; walk, crouch, and kneel throughout the shift.
  • Work under regular exposure to loud sounds, animal odors, zoonotic diseases, radiation, anesthesia, and cleaning chemicals necessary for an animal hospital environment.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers, lead gloves, aprons, and neck shields.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This is a position with variable shifts, and work hours/days are assigned based on program needs. Normal work schedule is 10 hours per day M-Th while surgical courses are in session, but are subject to change.
  • Required to work variable hours on short notice, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, covering staff shortages and holiday shifts. Good attendance habits are crucial. Vacations may be restricted during the academic year.
  • Work in high traffic areas with constant noise from animals and people in a fast-paced, constantly changing, and heavy volume patient-care environment. May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught students and staff.
  • Work in an environment where animals are used for teaching. Work with animal cadavers and in animal shelter environments. Work with preserved animal specimens.
  • Drive large-sized animal transport vans between various locations on and off campus on a daily basis.
  • Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
  • Position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University policy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum License/Certification:

·         Valid CA Driver’s License required.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license, or equivalent experience and education and ability to obtain RVT license within 1 year.

  • Extensive experience in and knowledge of the technical care, welfare of, infectious diseases of, and disinfection protocols for small animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, small mammals, birds, and reptiles) and large animals (cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs) in a veterinary hospital or shelter environment, or in a teaching laboratory.

  • Extensive experience in the following: restraint of a large variety of animal species of various sizes and behaviors in a hospital or shelter environment; technical procedures of veterinary care including but not limited to drug administration, surgery, anesthesia, and imaging; operating and trouble-shooting basic surgical, anesthetic, imaging, and laboratory equipment.

  • Experience working effectively and efficiently independent of supervision to set deadlines and priorities, direct others, attain goals, and evaluate workload and performance, with experience in project management and leading a diverse team of individuals to achieve operational directives.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Proficiency in use of personal computers, databases, spreadsheets, electronic calendars, inventory management systems, and word processing software.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written skills to provide and receive instruction, constructive feedback, to work in a diverse group/team-centric environment, and to develop and clearly fill out forms and inventories used in patient care and operational management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

 
  • Current Registered Lab Animal Technician License

Preferred Education/Experience:  

·         Experience maintaining animal facilities in excellent visual and operational condition.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·         Working knowledge of Federal, State, and University requirements and guidelines in the governing animal use and welfare, such as the housing and general care of animal species.
