Department Description

The Center for Equine Health (CEH), as part of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, is dedicated to advancing the health, welfare, performance, and veterinary care of horses through research, education, and public service. We also serve as the USDA’s California contagious equine metritis (CEM) quarantine and treatment station for mares and stallions newly imported into the United States.

This position is located in Templeton, California.



Job Summary

Under general supervision of the facility manager, oversee the health, safety and well-being of all horses at Templeton Farms. With strict adherence to USDA protocols, provide technical support and expertise for the Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) quarantine program. Deliver individualized care and ensure well-being of recently imported horses, perform specialized cultures to determine CEM status, update owners/agents/trainers regarding horse’s status and quarantine progress. Coordinate with laboratories to obtain test results, working to ensure the integrity of the program and protect the US equine breeding industry. Support the day-to-day operations of the CEH in furthering its mission of advancing the health, welfare, performance and veterinary care of horses.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Bend, squat, lift, reach above shoulder level, kneel, stand, and walk on hard surfaces up to seven hours per day.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver bales of hay/alfalfa and large bags of grain.
  • Ability to quickly respond and access horses within the facility; must be able to catch, restrain and lead equines.
  • Work outside in all weather conditions.
  • This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       Position requires safe handling and restraint of mares, stallions and foals of various breeds, ages, size, and temperament on a daily basis.

·       Work in an animal care environment that will contain dander, dust, animal waste and similarly unpleasant substances.

·       Position may require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: zoonoses, chemicals, pesticides, fuels, and solvents.

·       Work flexible schedule including evenings, nights, and weekends or on-call status on holidays, usually on short-notice to meet operational needs or in an emergency.

·       Maintain biosecurity by washing hands and/or wearing protective clothing and limiting or eliminating contact with outside horses.

·       Valid CA driver’s license to transport animals.

·       On occasion, employee may be asked to travel to Davis for coverage or cross-training purposes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum License/Certification:

·       Ability to obtain federal certification by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to perform CEM cultures.

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Extensive experience in safely catching, handling and restraining mares, stallions, and foals; skills to recognize health problems in horses and communicate these concerns effectively.

·       Experience adhering to clinician instructions or established protocols in administering various medical treatments.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Skill to communicate effectively and professionally with clients, staff, and students both orally and in writing.

·       Computer, calendar, and email skills to communicate effectively with constituent groups and maintain accurate and organized medical records and files.

·       Skill to interpret and understand department and university practices, procedures, manuals, safety regulations, directives, and other work-related documents.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience with live-cover stallion breeding.

·       Experience in adhering to federal, state and/or University protocols governing the health and welfare of animals.
