Department Description

The University of California Veterinary Medical Center-San Diego (UCVMC-SD) is a unit that provides outreach and clinical services for the teaching programs within the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The clinical program of the UCVMC-SD is comprised of an administrative support unit & separate clinical services (Cardiology, Nephrology/Urology/Hemodialysis and Clinical Pharmacy).



Job Summary

Under general supervision, perform a wide variety of patient treatments to provide technical support for services of the UCVMC-SD. Provide para-veterinary technical support to coordinate daily service activities and treatments and non patient tasks. In conjunction with other technicians, communicate with clients regarding the care and status of their animals. Provide backup for the other areas of the Center.

Work in 2 locations: Sorrento Valley and San Marcos.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Move and maneuver equipment and materials weighing up to 70 pounds.
• Restrain and handle all patients.
• Work standing and/or kneeling for extended periods of time.
• Lift up to 70 lbs. Stand for extended periods of time, work with patients and move animals on and off gurneys and in and out of cages.
• Perform sitting duties at counter or desk for extended periods of time.
• Legible handwriting to take messages.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       Work in 2 locations: Sorrento Valley and San Marcos.

·       This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Position may, at times, require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.

·       Work with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, infectious diseases, and distraught clients.

·       Rabies vaccinations/blood titers are required.

·       Valid CA driver’s license required.

·       Work in an environment with exposure to radioactivity, anesthesia gases & carcinogenic medicines. Specific hazards of the position are documented in the VMTH Safety Training Manual and will be reviewed with the incumbent annually.

·       Work in confined or small spaces and in high traffic areas that include noise from animals and people.

·       Work in an environment with animal odors.

·       Work occasional overtime and variable hours; work schedule subject to change with prior notification.

·       No eating or drinking in surgery rooms and some work areas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Experience working as an animal health technician in a small animal clinical setting.

·       Experience to safely handle or restrain all patients for transport, diagnostic procedures, and sample collection without harm to patient or personnel.

·       Experience calculating and administering dosages of medications, parenteral fluids and diets.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Skill and knowledge to fill prescriptions as well as telephone outside pharmacies to relay accurate information for client drug prescriptions per doctor’s orders.

·       Knowledge of normal vital signs, anatomy and physiology of small animals (canine/feline) to identify abnormalities.

·       Knowledge of microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, and animal husbandry of patients to understand written and verbal instruction regarding patient care.

·       Computer knowledge & skills to utilize various software programs for word processing, spreadsheets, scheduling, entry and retrieval of medical records and database management programs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

·       Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience interviewing clients to obtain patient medical histories, recording findings in the medical record and to providing client education.

·       Experience with infection control and disinfection in a hospital environment.

·       Experience communicating with a diverse group of people including clients, clinicians, referring veterinarians, students, and staff in an accurate, professional and collegial manner.

·       Skill to provide intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients. Experience working proactively and independently or as part of a team to coordinate, facilitate, set up equipment and supplies, troubleshoot and anticipate needs for activities in assigned areas in an accurate, efficient and timely manner.

·       Skills to interact with clients courteously and effectively while representing UC Davis at the highest standard of professionalism. Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with coworkers and do so in accordance with UC Davis policies and procedures.
