Position Summary
William & Mary’s Vertebrate Animal Care Unit seeks applicants for the position of Animal Care Aide. The position is part-time renewable/continuing and runs 12 months through the year (approximately 20 hours per week, Monday-Friday mornings until early afternoon). The ideal candidate will provide high quality, reliable and durable care to animals housed at the university (rodents, aquatics, small birds).
Primary responsibilities include daily animal care and husbandry: feeding/watering/cage changes, conducting health observations, facilities upkeep, and supply management. Additionally, this position will provide critical backup support during periods of staff absence (i.e., during vacation periods, and summer and winter school break). Training for this position will be provided on site. The university is under both federal and internal Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee mandate to maintain high animal care standards. Part-time employees make it possible for the university to maintain these compliance mandates.
Conditions of Employment
This is an hourly, part-time position.
Must be available Monday through Friday, from mornings until early afternoon. Work schedule: approximately 20 hours per week.
All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must meet physical requirement for the job, including ability to lift up to 50lbs
Preferred Qualifications
College-level course work (completed or in progress) in fields related to animal science such as biology, veterinary medicine, and psychology, or experience producing comparable knowledge and skills.
