Position Description

The Analyst, Finance and administration position offers an opportunity to contribute to the development of this groundbreaking new organization, and to enrich one’s skills and experience by contributing to decision-making about its future direction. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Analyst will be responsible for a variety of financial tasks: financial analysis, planning, forecasting, and reporting; assisting the Executive Director in developing and monitoring budgets; managing procurement and payments; developing processes for managing the accounting of financial transactions using financial software and university systems; and representing the Salata Institute in collaborating with Finance and Administration in the Office of the President and Provost, and conducting essential operational functions.

The Analyst will also be responsible for significant aspects of the Institute’s operations, including the administration of matters that pertain to visiting scholars and the Institute’s fellows. This work will require collaborating with colleagues on matters such as facilities planning and procurement.  

As part of the Institute’s core team and one of the first employees of the recently created Salata Institute, the Analyst will also be expected to contribute to the growth of this new organization by helping to develop business processes, as well as to cultivate a mission-driven organizational culture of collaboration, creativity, respect, diversity, and inclusion. It is essential that the person in this position have a strong work ethic, be flexible and adaptive to change, and demonstrate professionalism and enthusiasm for the endeavor.

 Job-Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Finance-related responsibilities

  • Supports the Executive Director in the development of the Institute’s annual budget.
  • Monitors operational expenses and revenues.
  • Evaluates quarterly results, operating budgets, and analyzes multi-year financial plans, and provides guidance to the Executive Director on matters, including the strategic use of endowment and unrestricted funds.
  • Develops hypothetical scenarios and conducts financial analyses that inform decision-making.
  • Manages financial closings.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations on the Institute’s budget and financial outlook to the Institute’s leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Develops processes for managing the accounting of financial transactions using financial software.
  • Manages procurement and payments.
  • Represents the Salata Institute in collaborating with Finance and Administration in the Office of the President and Provost and with other colleagues in central finance division.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Supports the administration of matters pertaining to the Institute’s visiting scholars and fellows.
  • Assists the Salata Institute’s Fellows (1-2 per year) in accessing University services and providing information and support that facilitate their temporary relocation to the Cambridge, MA area.
  • Serves as the liaison to Harvard Schools on matters concerning the appointment of visiting scholars.
  • Coordinates annual exempt salary increase program and performance management compliance and reporting.
  • Serves as the Salata Institute’s liaison to Human Resources and on employment issues.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in the Harvard Kennedy School to address any facilities issues that arise.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following qualifications are strongly preferred. If you meet some, but not all of them, you are still encouraged to apply; we value employees with a willingness to learn .

Demonstrated interest in climate change and sustainability.

  • (or other relevant professional/graduate degree) is a plus;
  • An MBA with prior consulting experience, or extensive financial analytics experience in a complex environment, can offset the required years of experience indicated above.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, written oral communication, and organizational skills,

  • experience presenting to senior leadership.
  • Familiarity with Harvard's financial and reporting systems (i.e., Oracle financial applications, including AP, HCOM and PCard; HUBS; People Soft; and Concur).

    Work Format Details

    This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
