Job Summary
Under the general direction of their manager, leads outpatient perioperative pharmacy operations for multiple sites, including procurement, prescribing, compounding, dispensing, storage of medications, administration and monitoring. The supervisor will also oversee day to day operations, including personnel development, evaluation, and discipline, troubleshooting, and directing the unit’s functions to address the needs of the organization. Partners with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide treatments and advice to patients, records patient history relating to medication use and ensures the safe and secure storage of medications and related supplies. Offers expertise in determining the best possible treatments for specific diseases, stays current on pharmacy regulations, treatments and developments in research and design. Pharmacists are the experts on drug therapy and the primary health professionals who optimize use of medication for the benefit of the patients. Meets educational needs of patients, healthcare team, students and residents. Ensures adherence to regulatory and fiscal requirements.
Serves as the Pharmacist-in-charge (PIC) on record with the California Board of Pharmacy and assumes all legal and regulatory responsibilities for the assigned Bayfront Ambulatory Surgery Center Pharmacy. Provides oversight for the daily operations of the Bayfront Ambulatory Surgery Center Pharmacy. In collaboration with their manager, responsible for fiscal and productivity management and planning of area operations. Coordinates provision of all pharmacy services, including budget, operations, quality management, personnel, administrative, regulatory and educational functions. Ensures that the area meets all defined objectives and standards of practice, including compliance with applicable state and federal laws, accrediting body requirements, and customer service. Responsible for provision and documentation of medications and medication-related services to patients, according to standards established by the Department of Pharmaceutical Services.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay, Mount Zion, and Owens Street Campuses, provide a full range of services for patients cared for by the UCSF Health System as well as its providers and payors. These services include, but are not limited to drug procurement, storage, and security; safe accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the UCSF Health System; drug information services for clinicians and patients; and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs. The Department encompasses the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic unit within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.D. curriculum, research, and public service. The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Department of Pharmaceutical Services share its philosophy of advancing pharmacy practice.
Required Qualifications
- Three (3) years of experience as a licensed pharmacist in a hospital pharmacy or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrates subject matter knowledge of pharmaceutical theory and industry best practices in optimizing the use of medication to treat patients.
- Knowledge of all pharmacy federal and state laws and regulations. Ability to apply policy knowledge to improve workflow systems and protocols.
- Demonstrated leadership skills in training and guiding employees on technical skills to
compound, prepare, mix, and manufacture sophisticated or rare medication in specialty area. Motivates and inspires staff to improve quality and services. - Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
- Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner. Ability to apply policy knowledge to identify productivity inefficiencies and compliance risks.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, patients, multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff.
- Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies.
Demonstrated ability to solve patient problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process. - Ability to listen actively to clinical staff and patients, understanding varying viewpoints and receiving feedback. Verbal and written communication skills to tactfully articulate reasoning behind own opinions and change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from others.
- Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in clinical documentation applications and pharmacy database technology and train others to effectively use applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post graduate year 1 [PGY1] In Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience required
- Post graduate year 2 [PGY2] in area of specialty practice or equivalent experience in specialty area preferred
- Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy and / or Board Certification in Specialty Practice
- Experience in the use of robotics and technology in drug delivery systems
- At least 3 years of pharmacy experience and 1 year of management experience
License/Certification
- Registered Pharmacist in the State of California
- Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association
- Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD) or equivalent training
