Summary

Basic functions and responsibility are to supervise the clinical activities of the Michigan Medicine American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited Sleep Laboratory at the Med Inn Sleep Lab site and perform administrative/operational duties as assigned. This position spends approximately 75% of the time performing supervisory responsibilities and 25% support for the day-to-day operations ensuring a smooth flow of patients through their sleep testing.

Responsibilities*

Clinical supervisory responsibilities:

• Supervise the technical clinical assignments for an adult and pediatric patient population.
• Supervise routine and specialized diagnostic and titration polysomnograms (PSG?s), including but not limited to the following:
• Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT's)
• Abbreviated Cardio-Respiratory Studies
• Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)
• Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT)
• Esophageal Pressure Monitoring (PES)
• Tracheostomy (capped/uncapped) Studies
• End-Tidal Carbon Dioxide Monitoring (ETCO2)
• Transcutaneous Carbon Dioxide Monitoring (TCO2)
• Oxygen Titrations
• Oral Appliance Titration Studies
• Ventilator Titration Studies
• Full EEG Montage
• Supervise the evaluation of scoring of diagnostic studies to ensure adherence to established American Academy of Sleep Medicine and UMHS Sleep Laboratory guidelines and protocols.
• Provide technical expertise to registered and non-registered Polysomnograph Techs, trainees and students.
• Provide oversight for adherence to related sleep research protocols.
• Supervise application of recording devices to the patient and physiological calibrations to verify proper functioning of equipment.
• Oversee cleaning, sterilization, high level disinfection of equipment, and ensure use of Universal Infection Control procedures.

Administrative/Operational responsibilities:

• Coordinate the clinical operations of the section or area with other departments, patients, and the sleep clinic with authority to make commitments within established guidelines. Offsite locations require coordination with the contracted cleaning services and linen service companies.
• Collaboration with other UMHS sleep lab sites to achieve appropriate staffing.
• Develop or modify operational practices consistent with established standards.
• Assist in the development of objectives for clinical activities of the laboratory related to productivity, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
• Monitor supply expenditures, identify and resolve irregularities, and provide reports as required.
• Recommend the procurement and applicability of new equipment and supplies.
• Ordering, tracking, and distribution of equipment, instruments, and supplies.
• Development of supply/equipment par levels; tracking of inventory, prioritize cost saving measures.
• Maintain compliance with regulatory and licensing agencies.
• Timekeeping Entry/Corrections schedule staff.
• Plan in-service training programs for students, trainees, and new staff members.
• Evaluate students, trainees, and sleep techs? performance, provide coaching when necessary, and issue appropriate discipline if needed.
• Interview and recommend the employment of staff

Perform other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Supervision is received from a Sleep Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Director.

SUPERVISION EXCERCISED

Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over Allied Health Technical Coordinator(s), Polysomonography Technologists and Technicians, and Lab Assistants.

Required Qualifications*

Associate's degree in a related health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. Two- four years of relevant clinical experience is required. Registration with the governing body of polysomnographic technologists and BLS Certification. Skilled in recognizing and responding appropriately to patients’ medical problems and physiological events including: cardiac dysrhythmias, respiratory events, and seizures. This position requires infrequent standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.
