Job Description:

The Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University invites applications for 2 open faculty positions at the Full or Associate professor levels, with a planned start date of Jan 2024 or Fall 2024. Outstanding candidates at the Assistant Professor level may also be considered.

We invite prominent researchers in the interdisciplinary fields of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), data science and their applications to complex societal problems. We seek, specifically, candidates who conduct and lead research in the design, development and implementation of advanced AI/ML and data theoretic approaches in socially relevant application domains including healthcare and public health, health disparities and equity, agriculture and food security, pandemic and natural disaster prevention and preparedness and energy and environment sustainability. Candidates should possess deep scientific and technical knowledge in the use of AI and Data Science to solve wicked problems and have proven experience in the application of these methodologies in one or more of the domains above. Ideal candidates will possess the fundamental expertise and the interest to apply and or translate their applied knowledge to different domains of critical importance. Expertise in AI ethics and policy are especially valued as is social systems intelligence and human centric AI.

Successful candidates will be expected to present a clear research vision and a strategic plan for securing research funding. They will be an integral part of the AI and Data Science cluster and join a team of exceptional researchers from across Watson College with expertise and passion to leverage advances in AI for solving complex socio-economic challenges of national and global priority. They may also establish fruitful cross-disciplinary collaborations with faculty in other schools within the University as well as with Watson College's strategic academic, federal and non-profit research partners. The EIP hires will have a direct role in the growth of the University's education programs related to artificial intelligence.

The positions advertised here are supported by the State University of New York (SUNY) Empire Innovation Program (EIP), a key initiative of the State of New York. EIP professors are recognized leaders in their fields with international reputation for outstanding research, established track records of scholarly achievements, high-impact publications and significant external funding. Faculty hired in this position at the Full or Associate Professor level will have the title, "SUNY Empire Innovation Professor" or "SUNY Empire Innovation Associate Professor"  depending on their appointment rank.  Faculty hired at the Assistant Professor level will have the title "SUNY Chancellors Early Career Scholar".

Binghamton University currently enrolls over 18,000 students and Watson College has over 3,100 students across its five departments (Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Systems Science and Industrial Engineering) and two specialized programs (Materials Science and Engineering, Engineering Design Division). Of the six TAEs, two, namely, the Health Sciences TAE and the Data Sciences TAE, are closely aligned with the focus areas of this position and the EIP hire with expertise into AI, ML, and health sciences will have the opportunity to actively participate in and contribute to research efforts under these TAEs. Requirements:

Candidates must have a doctorate in an engineering or computer science discipline or a closely related field, and must have outstanding research credentials including proven research leadership, strong record of scholarship as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and citations  and a strong record of securing external funding in the area of Artificial Intelligence on closely related domains with a focus on socially relevant applications.  In addition, candidates must have demonstrated experience as an effective instructor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
