Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one Agronomy Internship Program position for Crop and Soil Science at Oregon State University (OSU).
This position is designed to provide assistance to the Union-Baker-Wallowa County Extension Agronomist (OSU Dept. of Crop and Soil Science county-based faculty member) to conduct field-based research projects and to design/deliver extension outreach programs focused on irrigated cropping systems and integrated pest management (IPM) in NE Oregon. 
The incumbent will be needed 20-40 hours/week during late spring and summer months and, depending on project needs, may also have opportunity to work up to 10 hours/week during the fall, winter, and/or spring term of the current academic year. The position provides an opportunity to acquire agronomic field research and extension outreach experience needed to fulfill undergraduate internship requirements
Position Duties
  • Performs routine to complex technical tasks (trial establishment/maintenance, data collection/entry) in support of research projects involving irrigated cropping systems and integrated pest management (IPM). 
  • In addition, this position will assist with the development and delivery of extension outreach programs (e.g. indoor workshops, field tours, farm visits, etc.) and, when applicable, research proposals and/or professional presentations. 
  • Current research and extension activities include: disease/insect pest monitoring in irrigated cropping systems; weed control in grasses grown for seed (Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue); grass seed crop development; area-wide insect pest monitoring & alert programs in Kentucky bluegrass and seed/commercial potatoes; and biological pest management/pollinator conservation.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Agronomy and/or seek to fulfill internship requirements for related discipline areas. 
  • High school students are eligible to apply but must be at least 18 years of age in order to drive a university vehicle.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Position is based out the Union County Extension office located at 10507 North McAlister Road, La Grande, OR. 
  • Hourly pay rate for the student technical assistant position ranges from $14.20 to $18.00/hour and is eligible for overtime when the work week exceeds 40 hours.
