Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
An Agricultural Technician is sought to provide technical support for the State Extension Agronomist with applied research and extension programming. This program performs applied research at seven UMD Research and Education Centers located across the state related to the production of corn, soybean, wheat, barley, and other crops of interest to Maryland producers. The incumbent may assist with research performed at private farms within Maryland. The incumbent will also assist with Extension programming, including preparation for field days, twilight tours, or other educational events.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
Three years in agricultural work, one year of which was in agricultural research.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in the use of farm equipment. 
  • General knowledge of and ability to use related laboratory equipment. 
  • General knowledge of basic mathematics and ability to perform mathematical and algebraic calculations. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to lift and transport agricultural supplies, tools, and equipment, to climb and to perform extensive standing and walking. 
  • Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment. 
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
Preferences:
Preferences:
  • Experience performing agricultural research
  • Experience with using and troubleshooting precision agriculture equipment (eg. Autosteer)
  • Experience in maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting small plot farm equipment e.g. research combines and planters with automatic tripping systems
  • Experience with welding and machine fabrication
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Three years of experience working with agronomic crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat.
  • Experience in maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting commercial scale farm equipment e.g., tractors, combines, and planters
  • Experience working with power tools and general machine shop equipment
  • Able to lift and carry more than 40 pounds
  • Able to perform periodic work in inclement weather or dusty conditions
  • Ability to wear and work in PPE, like a respirator
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Research Chemical Applicator license.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally via different media (written and verbal) with researchers, graduate students, research farm managers and personnel, and peers
