Job Description

The Hazmat Instructor conducts, develops, and revises the hazmat training courses and assists other instructors or programs as needed. Develops and updates training aids, audio/visual pieces, student materials, and lesson plans. Assists with maintenance and inventory of course equipment and interacts with clients and staff in a positive and professional manner. This position reports to the Training Coordinator.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Four years of experience in hazmat related field and experience in developing & delivering emergency response training.

  • One year of experience in adult education and/or training.

Required Licenses/Certifications: 

  • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

  • Must have a valid Class A CDL or ability to obtain within 180 days of employment.

  • Must have a valid passport or ability to obtain within 180 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Six years of experience in hazmat related field and experience in developing and delivering emergency aid.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat.

  • Ability to support training delivery for up to 8-10 hours/day.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

  • Physical conditioning consistent with setting up classrooms, movement of light, moderate, and/or heavy training equipment, wearing hazardous materials personal protective equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to interact with clients and staff positively and professionally.

  • Knowledge of basic office software and instructional programs.

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups.

  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods.

  • Skilled in utilizing various learning and active listening strategies.

  • Ability to comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning.

  • Knowledge of Hazmat-WMD operations and training, emergency response planning and operations, or emergency management experience and training.

  • Ability to facilitate and adapt course and course content.

  • Ability to conduct virtual learning, online learning, and /or simulation-based training.

  • Ability to actively demonstrate the TEEX Values – Safety, Teamwork, Adaptability, Respect, and Stewardship.

Equipment: 

  • Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, telephone.

  • Training/field equipment.

  • Personal protective equipment.

Notifications:

  • This position is security sensitive.

  • This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.

  • As part of TEEX’s mission of providing training, developing practical solutions, and saving lives; this position could be required, if called upon, to deploy within the State of Texas as directed by this position’s Division Director/HQ Department Head.

  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.

  • Employment in this role is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and will also be subject to random drug screening per DOT regulation.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages: 


Course Instruction - 70%

  • Ensures all training materials, training aids, and classroom are ready for the client.

  • Ensures all concerned parties are contacted of the schedule, location, and times.

  • Ensures all training materials, training aids and classrooms are secured upon the completion of the course.

  • Presents course curriculum and utilizes approved course materials.

  • Submits all required reports for assigned course within 3 working days upon completion of the course.

  • Assists instructing other ESTI programs as needed.

Course materials and Equipment Maintenance - 25%

  • Reviews and updates course syllabus, lesson plans, visual aids, and student materials as needed.

  • Updates and provides recommendations to revise as necessary.

  • Assists with inventory control or course delivery of equipment.


Reporting & Documentation - 5%

  • Submits all reports, leave requests, etc., in a timely manner to the Program Coordinator.

  • Provides all documentation necessary for travel purposes.

Other Duties:

  • Reports to work at the designated time specified by the Hazmat Training Coordinator.

  • Maintains required professional credentials.

  • Promotes teamwork within the program.

  • Performs additional work duties as assigned.
