The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The APP also examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care. This position is Not remote and involves experience with Inpatient Hepatology and outpatient Gi and hepatology. The APPs will also see Hepatology and GI patient in an outpatient clinic setting by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies. Assist physicians in performing medical procedures, up to and including blood drawing, vital signs and nursing assessments, history and physical.   This position is M-F and requires 8 half days in outpatient ambulatory clinics and Hepatology Inpatient at University of Miami Hospital on a rotating basis.  The APRN is required to take CITI certification in order to participate as provider in our Clinical Research Studies.  The APRN will be involved in interpretation and dissemination of results to patients for fibroscans performed by the lab.  

• Rounds both independently and collaboratively on Hepatology Inpatient Service at University of Miami hospital no later than 8 am and have proper sign-out of patients with fellows at the end of the day and prior to weekends. 

• Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment. Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.  

• Writes prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.  

• APP will independently follow patients in an outpatient setting and manage the care of patients concurrently.   

• Initiates and facilitates clinical research protocols and coordinates patient care with research staff.  

• Obtains complete medical history independent of supervision by the physician.  

• See patients in follow-up in between infusions and post procedure as necessary. 

• Initiate and Maintain infusion orders for non-chemo infusions as per protocol 

• Read and assess fibroscan studies provide interpretation 

• Orders appropriate procedures and laboratory tests according to practice guidelines.  

• Develops, implements and evaluates a plan of care that is appropriate for the patient and family.  

• Actively participates in quality assurance programs and peer review activities. 

• Responsible for providing assistance to physicians in the care and treatment of patients.  

• Provides medical support to staff, triaging and implementing care in a knowledgeable and skillful  manner, as evidenced by team feedback and documentation in medical records.  

• Administers nursing assessments to include performing examinations, giving injections and assessing a patient's health status.  

• Assess severity of patient's condition, determining and directing patients to appropriate medical providers.  

• Provide peer-to-peer reviews with insurance carriers in support of patients medications 

• Consents patients for GI procedures, and places orders for procedures and preps 

• Maintain EMR inbox and close encounters in a timely fashion according to UMMG guidelines. 

• Respond to patient inquiries and requests, and communicate results to patients in coordination with our back office Nurses, Medical Assistants and Secretaries. 

• Provides inbasket message coverage for Providers who depart the practice, or are out on FMLA. 

• Closes inbasket messages within 7 days 

• Closes encounters within 3 days of visit. 

• Must have annual flu vaccine, unless able to provide medical or religious documentation.

• Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.  

• Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients. 

• Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs. 

• Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities 

• Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability. 

• Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations. 

• Monitors the effectiveness of interventions. 

• Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients. 

• Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals. 

• Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools. 

• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS  

 

Education: 

• Master’s degree in Nursing or PA studies

 

Certification and Licensing: 

• Valid State of Florida APRN License .
• Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certification Required

 

Experience:   

• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience 

• Previous experience in GI  and Hepatology practice as APRN or PA
• Experience of 1 year Inpatient Hepatology as independent provider

• Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques  

• Performs in tactful and professional manner. 

• CITI Certification for Clinical Research Study participation 

• Previous experience with EPIC EMR software, or demonstrated ability to manage patients in EMR
