Required Degree: Required: Bachelor's degree in music or music-related field such as recording or business required. Preferred: Master's degree in music, or at least 10 years of professional experience working as a guitarist in the music field.

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:  Guitar playing and teaching experience required

Duties/Expectations

  • Ability to effectively teach in a large class setting (up to 100 students)
  • Teach in a one-on-one class setting
  • Teach beginning level group guitar classes that cover the basic, first-position chords with idiomatic strumming of folk and pop styles, introductory fingerpicking patterns, tablature reading, and note reading in the first position.
  • Teach intermediate level guitar classes that reinforce the skills taught in Music 117 while also venturing into more advanced skills that are idiomatic of various folk and popular playing styles:  barre chords, power chords, and other types of chords like major sevenths, add9 chords, slash chords, suspended chords, etc., basic rock and blues improvisation, solo fingerpicking, etc.
  • Teach private lessons to non-music majors at the beginning through intermediate level.  Lessons may cover various styles:  classical, jazz, folk, pop, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, etc., and playing techniques used in those styles.

Must reside in the State of Utah to be eligible for employment consideration.  Must be willing to teach the course(s) in person, on campus.
