The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and highly talented engineer to manage and perform metal additive manufacturing (AM) research on campus and at Wright Patterson Air Force Base - AFRL. Work will include oversight, technical vision, business development, and execution of research in metallic additive manufacturing via Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). This position will lead and work with engineers/scientists to perform research designed to better understand the effects of laser manufacturing processes on materials through metallurgy driven experimentation, in-situ sensor integration/analysis, and machine innovation. This position will oversee work with a team of AM research engineers and scientist to advance metal AM research at UDRI. Work activities may include the following.

1. Leading metal AM research projects within UDRI’s AM Tech. Development Group.
2. Characterization of advanced AM material metallurgy.
3. Correlating the effects of advanced LPBF processing levers with metallurgy.
4. Working with aerospace design and analysis teams to deliver AM-processible materials.
5. Designing, and customizing laser powder bed fusion machinery.
6. Characterization and testing of AM Specimens and parts.
7. Integrating in-situ process sensors.
8. Collecting and analyzing AM build data.
9. Designing, printing, and consulting on all things metal AM.
10. Generating new ideas and business.

Minimum Qualifications:

R2 Qualifications
• A bachelor's degree in engineering or materials science from an accredited University.
• 3 years of experience in metal additive manufacturing or related field.
• Experience operating laser-based manufacturing equipment.
• Effective ability to communicate both written and verbally, work well with others, and think critically and drive a project to completion with little supervision.
• Due to security clearance requirements of this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

R3 Qualifications
• Must meet all R2 minimum qualifications.
• Bachelors degree and 8 years of directly related experience or Masters Degree and 7 years of directly related experience or PhD and 6 years of directly related experience.
• Leadership or technical mentoring experience, ability to work in a team environment, and the ability to provide technical leadership for supporting personnel and collaborators.

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

R2 Preferred Qualifications
• A graduate degree in engineering or materials science from an accredited university.
• Experience with metallurgical characterization for AM materials.
• Experience in correlating effects of LPBF processing levers on metallurgy.
• Understanding of laser/material interaction.
• Demonstrated experience in mechanical testing and materials characterization.
• Basic understanding of data acquisition and analysis concepts.
• Experience performing design of experiments (DOE's) and statistical analysis.
• CAD experience.

R3 Preferred Qualifications
• A graduate degree in engineering or materials science from an accredited university.
• Experience with metallurgical characterization for AM materials.
• Experience in correlating effects of LPBF processing levers on metallurgy.
• Understanding of laser/material interaction.
• Demonstrated experience in mechanical testing and materials characterization.
• Basic understanding of data acquisition and analysis concepts.
• Experience performing design of experiments (DOE's) and statistical analysis.
• CAD experience.
• Ability to drive new research funding and collaboration opportunities for growing advanced material AM program at UDRI.
