The Economics Super-Department currently has more than 60 resident and visiting faculty, postdoctoral candidates and other scholars, 375 majors, 100 Ph.D. students, and serves over 5,000 students on campus each year. The department is split across three colleges: 1) the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), 2) the statutory School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR), 3) and the Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy (Brooks), The Economics Department reports to the endowed College of Arts & Sciences, as well as the statutory School of Industrial and Labor Relations, and the School of Public Policy. The faculty, staff, students and funding are in one of these three entities.

Under the direction and guidance of the department manager, serve as main point of contact for all Department of Economics financial activity. Complete financial transactions for department activities such as purchasing, requisitions, contract set-up, processing payments and travel reimbursements.


Answer and direct finance-related requests and inquiries from faculty, students, and vendors. Explain policies and resolve routine questions and problems specifically related to finance and accounting. Use Kuali Financial System to generate monthly financial reports and review accuracy of transactions.


As part of a team environment, provide backup support to front office staff and assist with Commencement activities.


This is an ongoing, part-time, 20 hours per week, benefits eligible position. There are no plans for this position to become full time. The possibility of working hybrid 1 day a week can be discussed after a period of training and onboarding.


Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • HS diploma and at least 2 years of experience.
  • Proficient in, or ability to quickly learn, Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, FileMaker, website editing, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information as well as communicate with tact and diplomacy is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure, use sound judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent; and balance conflicting priorities are necessary.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills are necessary.
  • Accuracy in math, spelling, grammar, proofreading and attention to detail is required.
  • Must be flexible and receptive to new ideas and approaches.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years college coursework, or Associates degree; technical/ vocational school degree; and/or 2-3 years related experience.
  • Bachelor's degree is strongly desired
  • Experience working in an office setting
  • Proficiency in Excel, Kuali Financial Systems and WebFin2, and working knowledge of Cornell's financial policies
  • Experience with Cornell's Concur travel and reimbursement system
  • Knowledge of Procurement and Travel & Meal business cards, eShop and I Want Doc procurement systems
