Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Philosophy is committed to advancing and transmitting an understanding of fundamental questions of reality, knowledge, and value, and is an essential element of a liberal education. The Department of Philosophy looks at the history of struggles to answer these fundamental questions and develops analytical and critical resources for engaging these questions as they arise in individual and common experience. There is a permanent faculty count of 21 and a fixed-term faculty count of 5 (depending on academic year and funding availability) who provide instruction on both the Undergraduate and graduate level. The Department currently enrolls hundreds of students every fall, spring and summer and houses the PPE Program (Philosophy, Political Science and Economics) and the Parr Center for Ethics. There are also 37 enrolled graduate student teaching assistants who provide instruction to undergraduates throughout the academic year. Both the faculty and the graduate students are actively engaged in research in areas including ethics, political philosophy, ancient philosophy, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language.
Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to manage accounts associated with pure faculty members: sponsored projects, state, auxiliary, and trust funds. This position will be responsible for processing summer salary payments for faculty members, managing the department’s equipment and space inventory, acting as Concur delegate and processing travel reimbursements for pure faculty visitors and graduate students, and assisting the Business Officer with special projects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- General knowledge of accounting principles and practices
- Must be able to interpret and analyze financial data
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Excellent organizational skills, the ability to multi-task as well as be flexible
- Ability to effectively problem solve
- Ability to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Knowledge of and ability to explain and apply the provisions of the standardized accounting practices of UNC, State, and Federal Government.
- Experience with ConnectCarolina HR & Finance Workcenter, Concur, Infoporte, and other relevant UNC systems
- Prior experience with Contracts and Grants processes, including post-award management and Federal funding regulations
- Knowledge of NIH, NSF, and other grant funding entities
