Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the Division of Academic Affairs. There are 42 faculty members, 39 SPA positions, 230 graduate students, 50 postdoctoral research associates, 400 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of ca. 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in three buildings with 287,000 sq. feet of space. The department’s teaching faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per class per semester. The majority of faculty are research active, in addition to supervision of graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF. and involves expenditures of more than thirteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department. The National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes and the Institute for Advanced Materials have separate administrative structures, but depend administratively on the Chemistry department.
Position Summary
This accounting technician position will be part of the accounting team as one of two positions responsible for day-to-day financial processing functions for the department of Chemistry. This will include accounts payables such as vendor payments, independent contractor requests, and purchase orders. This role will also manage travel requests and expenses for faculty, staff, graduate students and postdocs in the travel systems. Additionally, this role will handle billing for Chemistry recharge centers.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

- Excellent organizational skills, the ability to multi-task as well as be flexible

- Ability to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Knowledge of and ability to explain and apply the provisions of the standardized accounting practices of UNC, State, and Federal Government.
- Experience with ConnectCarolina Finance Workcenter, Concur, Infoporte, and other relevant UNC systems
