Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a major research university in the University of North Carolina System with student enrollment exceeding 29,000 students. The Department of Exercise and Sport Science (exss.unc.edu) supports an undergraduate program of over 1,400 undergraduate majors with three specialization areas (Exercise and Sport Science, Fitness Professional, Sport Administration); a Master of Arts graduate program enrolling ~60 students also with three specializations (Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology, Sport Administration); and a doctoral program in Human Movement Science in partnership with the UNC-CH School of Medicine (hmsc.unc.edu). The mission of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) is to discover, create and promote knowledge of human movement to improve the quality of life of individuals and society. The mission of EXSS is further enhanced through interdisciplinary cooperation and departmental faculty securing competitive extramural funding in the form of contracts and grants. These endeavors enable the department to advance knowledge and thus serve the state and nation.
The teaching, research, and service efforts of the EXSS Department are supported by an outstanding faculty and staff, which currently includes: 33 full-time faculty (plus 6 new hires starting July 1), 9 part-time (fixed term) faculty, 20 joint appointment / adjunct faculty, 8 emeritus faculty, 25 full-time EXSS staff members, and 16 full-time Campus Recreation staff members.
Position Summary
This position will report directly to the Accountant, and is expected to independently perform a full range of technical accounting work which may include responsibility for maintaining accounting records of considerable complexity. This position will routinely perform higher-level duties required to effectively manage fiscal operations of the department and is intended to provide skilled assistance to the Accountant, the Director of Administration, the Grants Manager, the PIs, the Department Chair, and outside stakeholders such as NFL and veteran sponsors. This position independently analyzes work for accuracy and is expected to be able to solve complex problems or issues. This position will be responsible for testing new processes and coordinating and implementing system changes. There will be multiple circumstances when this position will interface with areas serving sensitive populations via the work of the Gfeller Center, department labs and other departmental areas.
This position will be expected to serve as an expert in processing financial transactions for the Department of Exercise and Sport Science which includes the aforementioned programs, labs, and centers. The duties performed by the position will be diverse and complex which enables the incumbent to exercise initiative and judgment as decisions are made consistent with standard practice and established guidelines. This position will act as primary lead in conducting meetings with faculty and PIs to review budgets, assist with planning expenses and making projections. Additionally, this position will be responsible for the department’s day-to-day financial processing functions which include the following activities: 1) Procurement of Equipment and Services, 2) Accounts Payable, 3) Account Reconciliation, 4) Travel Accounting, 5) post award activities, 5) grant close out; and 6) financial budgeting, analysis, projections and reporting.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The selected candidate must be able to interact with and communicate to sensitive populations, large outside corporate sponsors, federal funding agencies, private entities, and public stakeholders. The selected candidate must have advanced knowledge of accounting methods, procedures, and practices. Must be skilled in reconciling, posting to ledgers, and maintaining budgets. The selected candidate must have advanced skills in financial reporting, financial spreadsheets, and forecasting. This position serves as the Lead Accounting Technician and will possess strong communication skills, analytical and organizational skills, and serve as a resource to faculty, staff, and departmental leadership. Attention to detail is essential. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience in accounting work. Experience in a research-intensive university environment is preferred, and UNC Chapel Hill experience is a plus. Working knowledge of accounting and grants management software and/or UNC financial systems including ConnectCarolina, RAMSeS, InfoPorte, Concur and eCRT.
