Job Description

Sun Devil Athletics seeks an Accountant who plans, organizes and directs all financial and internal business operations for various departments of Athletics. This position reports to the Athletics Business Manager. Ensures that goals and objectives are met with strict adherence to NCAA and conference rules and regulations as well as policies and procedures of the department, the University, and the Arizona Board of Regents.

Essential Duties

  • Under direction of the Athletics Business Manager, serves as primary financial contact for various Athletics Departments, ASU Financial Services, some outside vendors, and assists in annual audits.
  • Plans, organizes and supports all financial and internal business operations for various departments of Athletics. 
  • Prepares monthly and quarterly budget reports to support Associate/Assistant Director planning and assessment initiatives.
  • Responsible for monthly and year-end entries and transfers.
  • Monitors system status for various department queues.
  • Manages and updates general ledger for coding, accuracy, and other data quality initiatives.
  • Processes SDA accounts payable and receivable.
  • Provides specialized or general calculations and analysis support in various accounting functions; prepares specialized or highly complex reports, statements, analysis and interpretation utilizing advanced knowledge and proficiency in accounting practices and principles.
  • Prepares reports and assists in analyzing various revenue and expense budgets.
  • Prepares or reviews detailed journal entries, maintains complex ledgers and reconciles and analyzes reports.
  • Participates in internal and external audits and preparation of work papers.
  • Prepares and assists in analysis and interpretation of financial data for budgets, capital projects, endowments and special events.
  • Makes recommendations regarding changes to rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for processing trip requests and expense reports for assigned departments adhering to ASU policies and NCAA compliance.
  • Process, audit and code accounting transactions for assigned departments.
  • Key contact and liaison for departments assigned and general representation of Financial Services for Athletics. 
  • Training staff on financial services matters. 
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field AND one (1) year of professional accounting experience; OR, Five (5) years professional accounting experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience in using a computerized or enterprise financial system (e.g. Workday, Excel, PeopleSoft).
  • Experience in using online dashboards.

  • Experience in exhibiting high integrity, strong leadership skills and reliability.
  • Experience in reviewing and analyzing the work of others. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting, budgeting, and reporting procedures and techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with an athletic environment a plus.
  • Experience with ARMS and/or Concur Travel Systems a plus.
  • Experience in a university setting a plus.
  • Experience working in Athletics at a higher educational institution strongly desired.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures.
  • Experience in performing detailed numerical computations.
  • Experience in preparing detailed reports on a timely basis.
  • Experience in using computer hardware and software.
  • Position may require nights and weekend availability.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse 
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to:  computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
