The Accommodation Specialist reviews and interprets documentation of disability in conjunction with the student’s self-report and applies complex laws and best practices in the determination of appropriate accommodations. Provides academic advising, transition, and testing services, referrals to internal and community resources, and individual coaching to promote student success.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

Student Accessibility Accommodations

  • Engages students in an interactive process to review functional impact of disability within a learning environment

  • Applies current knowledge of federal and state mandates in the determination of appropriate accommodations on a case-by-case basis

  • Reviews documentation of disability, which may include complex educational assessment evaluations

  • Builds rapport, through active listening and provides follow up services to students

  • Interacts thoughtfully with students and faculty to address complex and sensitive issues

  • Coaches students on self-advocacy, time management, and organizational skills to promote student success

  • Works collaboratively with faculty to ensure positive and appropriate communication and the provision of required accommodations

  • Utilizes the AIM department database system for record keeping including documentation and tracking interactions through case notes.

  • Serves as a resource for faculty and staff members on disability related matters. Provides education and addresses concerns and questions on SAS processes and best practices.

  • Engages with staff, faculty, and administrators district wide to promote awareness of the diverse needs of students with disabilities

  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and AHEAD standards and guidelines


Advising and Transition 

  • Reviews placement scores and advises student on appropriate placement

  • Advises and provides broad information to current and prospective students regarding college transfer requirements, courses, and programs

  • Provides referrals to financial aid, veterans services, and career counseling as appropriate

  • Assist students in developing an education plan

  • Participates in transition presentations and workshops as assigned 

  • Works with area high schools in developing and preparing students for a successful transition to post-secondary education. 

  • Assists students with registration as needed

  • Enters advising notes into college approved electronic records system and other student tracking functions


Program Support

  • Contributes to and collaborates with the initiatives and work of the Student Accessibility Services team and director as well as Chemeketa Community College as a whole

  • Ensures optimal student support through the provision of excellent customer service

  • Participates in department and institution wide student recruitment and retention activities

  • Engages in department cross-training activities to maintain service delivery to students

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor degree from an accredited institution

Three years’ experience working with individuals with disabilities

One year of experience with the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended and section 504 of the Rehabilitation act as it applies to the post-secondary environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in special education, psychology, vocational rehabilitation, or related field

  • Two years of experience working directly with adult students with disabilities in higher education

  • Bilingual ASL

  • Demonstrated knowledge or recent professional development in at least one

  • targeted area of ASD, ID, or MH


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

SCHEDULE & MODALITY

Regular remote/hybrid work is not a feature of this position. At the supervisor's discretion, exemptions may be made for special projects or responsibilities requiring periodic needed focus time.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • This is a 100%, 12-month classified assignment of the B3 band and grade
  • Please note: The college is currently undertaking a comprehensive classification and compensation study.  No employee will lose base pay because of this study, however, classification titles and pay grades may change.  The successful candidate will receive notice of all changes prior to implementation which is currently projected for the Summer of 2024.
  • This position has a 6-month probationary period
  • All positions at Chemeketa are required to be available for work onsite as requested by the college.
  • Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include evenings and/or weekends
  • This position may require the use of your personal vehicle for transportation between campus locations
  • If requested, requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire
  • Employees must maintain Oregon, Washington or Idaho residency as a condition of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Sedentary Work:   Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary requirements are met.

PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS

Chemeketa Community College is considered a qualifying public employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, full-time employees working at the College may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.
