Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAA) and/or other related legislation
Experience or training (eg. motivational interviewing, appreciative advising) in direct student communication


Job Description:

Reporting through the Dean of Students Office in the Division of Student Affairs, Student Accessibility Services (SAS) coordinates reasonable accommodations for ISU students with documented disabilities and promotes access and student success at the University. The Accessibility Coordinator is responsible for coordinating services which includes determination of eligibility, administration of accommodations, and collaboration with professors/instructors in providing reasonable accommodations at Iowa State. This is primarily accomplished through documentation review followed by individualized conversations with students and campus partners. The Accessibility Coordinator also conducts informational presentations and workshops for the campus community regarding disability awareness, works collaboratively with the Director and Assistant Director on assessment to improve the unit and its services, and maintains accurate records related to eligibility and provision of services. 


This position will be hired as a Student Services Specialist II.

This employee must exercise independent judgment and/or decision-making ability with moderate supervisory consultation, effectively communicate and prioritize tasks to ensure timely access, and must engage in appropriate ongoing education and training to ensure effective delivery of service.

SUPERVISORY ASSIGNMENT/RELATIONSHIPS:

The Accessibility Coordinator reports to the Director of Student Accessibility Services.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Eligibility Determination and Services Coordination

  • Review medical documentation, school records (IEP and 504) and other evidence to determine eligibility for services.

  • Meet with students to review accommodation requests and review students responsibilities and rights under the American Disabilities Act.

  • Communicate with and assist professors/instructors related to their role in the delivery of reasonable accommodations and access.

  • Coordinate and ensure various services/processes are in place to deliver reasonable accommodations with various campus partners such as department of residence, dining, facilities, registrar.

  • Utilize and troubleshoot the SAS information management software (Accommodate).

  • Return daily phone calls, follow-up to emails and manage the team’s inbox.

  • Maintain accurate and timely records utilizing Accommodate.

Student Support and Consultation

  • Meet with students, parents, and others to complete "Welcome Meetings" providing information regarding eligibility and services.

  • Work collaboratively with students to problem solve accommodation concerns.

  • Guide students through basic level assistive technology needs supported through accommodations: textbook requests, overview of reader software, etc.

Assessment and Outreach

  • Develop and maintain use of assessment tools to assist Director and Assistant Director in data-driven reporting and decision making.

  • Assist and implement changes in processes resulting from assessment learning outcomes.

  • Conduct presentations and workshops for the campus community, promoting disability awareness and understanding of services and related processes for students with disabilities.
