Primary Purpose of Department
The primary purpose of the Office of Adult Students and Extended Services (OASES), a program under the Enrollment Management division at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, is to support the university’s enrollment goals by recruiting, retaining, and graduating adult and nontraditional students. OASES provides quality advising services and promotes educational opportunity by the research, design, implementation, and evaluation of academic programs and services for adult and nontraditional students. OASES offers services and programs to assist adult students in reaching their academic and career goals.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to advise the populations of students that are classified as adult and nontraditional students and coordinate adult student engagement programs to ensure an inclusive learning environment on campus. The adult and nontraditional student populations include, but are not limited to, prospective, newly admitted, readmitted, and transfer adult students.
The position includes the following primary areas of responsibility for adult students:
  • Advise adult and nontraditional students.
  • Coordinate and provide leadership for adult student engagement programs and services (research, design, marketing, management, budgeting, and evaluation).
  • Assist in coordinating recruitment and orientation programs.
  • Act as an essential resource for supporting the recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation of adult and nontraditional students.

Summary of Position Responsibilities
Serves as the primary advisor for populations of students that are classified as adult and nontraditional students.
  • Maintains current catalog knowledge of academic policy, major and minor degree requirements, and certification options/requirements.
  • Assists students in academic exploration, registration, and knowledge of policies and resources.
  • Coordinates programming to assist students in achieving their goals by researching, developing, managing, and evaluating programs and services designed to engage adult learners in the university experience.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to support students’ academic experiences and develop completion options.
  • Assists in the research, development, management, and evaluation of programs and services.
  • May teach or assist in teaching a UCOL course.
  • Committed to a team-oriented environment & to adult student success.
  • Works Monday-Friday and hours could vary based on the extended morning and evening office coverage needs, and some Saturday work is required.
  • Fulfills other responsibilities as needed and as assigned by the associate director or director of OASES.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • The minimum education and experience is a master’s degree from an accredited institution in higher education administration, adult education, liberal arts, business, or related field and at least four years of progressive academic advising experience or an equivalent capacity of service.
  • Exceptional human relationship skills and professional demeanor to establish immediate credibility and confidence with clients.
  • Experience in teamwork, collaboration, flexibility, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail s/timeframes/promptness and have the ability to multitask is essential.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and presentation skills are essential.
  • Strong teamwork ability to plan for and work on multiple projects concurrently and collaborate with other program and project leaders to work efficiently to maximize outcomes.
  • Proficiency with student information/records systems, MS Office Suite, and G Suite needed.
  • Proficiency with or capacity to learn about industry standard tools used for creating web and digital media content are essential.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt as the programming environment of the division or as the technology tools and systems evolve.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Preference will be given for persons who have excellent skills and experiences in adult student advising, teamwork, communication, public relations, and problem solving.
  • Knowledge, skills, and experiences working with academic policy, the course catalog, and assessment at a four-year public university.
  • Prior advising experience with adult and nontraditional learners at a four-year public university.
  • Experience with flexible working hours.
  • Available to work a rotational schedule each week and several Saturdays annually.
  • Proficiency with the Banner student records system, MS Office Suite, G Suite, social media, and creating web and digital media content.
