Job Description

The primary focus of the Professional Academic Advisor is to provide developmental advisement to pre-nursing and undergraduate nursing students. This employee will actively participate in all Academic Advisor activities and responsibilities. The Academic Advisor will communicate regularly with and provide personalized assistance to all assigned students as they progress toward their educational goals and providing accurate and helpful information.

The Academic Advisor builds and maintains relationships with ISU faculty, staff, ISU outreach centers, Admissions, Office of Academic Advising personnel, and pre-nursing/pre-health advisors at other institutions. The Academic Advisor must be proficient with admissions policies and procedures, general education and degree requirements, transfer credit, petition processes, scholarships and career development issues at both the university and program level. The Academic Advisor works in collaboration with the Office of Academic Advising.

Key Responsibilities

● Advise pre-nursing students for all undergraduate nursing programs

● Hold advising appointments with prospective and current nursing students in person, online, or by phone

● Assist advisees in course registration and monitor academic progress

● Connect students to campus resources as necessary

● Work within the current academic advising initiatives to promote a coordinated, proactive advising environment

● Serve on university committees as requested

● Communicate effectively with all advising entities and other key departments across campus

● Provide students feedback regarding application/admission requirements, including transfer credits and any petitions that may be needed

● Utilize all electronic databases and other sources of student information to full advising responsibilities, including but not limited to: ATI account, Degree Works, Moodle, ISU Navigate, and Plans of Study for all programs

● Serves as the main contact for nursing curricular requirement inquiries

●Organize, lead, and attend various events to engage with prospective students, such as:
o Pre-Health Professions Fairs
o New Student Orientation sessions, Info Nights, Bengal Visit Day, Experience ISU,
o Community College transfer fairs
o Other events as needed

● Provide tours and speak with prospective students and their families

Minimum Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
● Knowledge of higher education retention issues and approaches
● Knowledge of academic improvement strategies for students in academic difficulty.
● Demonstrated customer service excellence
● Strong communication skills, including written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
● Strong computer skills

Preferred Qualifications

● Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education admin, counseling, or related field
● Two or more years of experience in higher education – particularly in the area of academic advising and admissions
● Experience with health professions advising and/or counseling
● Experience working with diverse student populations
● Experience utilizing a student information system (e.g. Banner, PeopleSoft)
● Knowledge of student development theory
● Knowledge of retention issues in higher education


Additional Information

Salary will be between $46,050-$49,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
