The School of Education & Human Development has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Academic Advisor (Intermediate Level) position.

Jobs in the Academic Services career family provide direct professional support for the teaching and/or educational service mission of the university. Functions include academic advising/counseling, student personnel administration, recruitment and admissions, registration, financial aid, faculty affairs, library services, curriculum administration, and others involving direct support of the educational mission of an academic unit. 

Intermediate Level:  Work involves creating, integrating, applying, and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

Nature of Work:
Elevating student success is CU Denver’s first and highest priority.  The School of Education & Human Development does this through targeted support to students which increases retention and graduation.  Academic advising is recognized within the School of Education & Human Development (SEHD) as an integral part to elevating student success. This full-time, University Staff (unclassified) position will work with a team of academic advisors, faculty, and administrators to guide students through an educational path and to develop and implement programs and services that foster student persistence and graduation. Building relationships with current community college students interested in transferring into the program, new freshmen, as well as retaining students to graduation, is a key part of this position.  Successful candidates will have multi-cultural competence, an understanding of an urban campus, facility in supporting diverse and first-generation students and will be able to develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.


Duties in this job function include: 
  • The process between the student and an academic advisor of exploring the value of a general education, reviewing the services and policies of the institution, discussing educational and career plans, and making appropriate course selections.

  • Educational services and school resources provided to students in the effort to help them generally succeed in school.

  • Yield of new students and retention of continuing students

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Academic Advising:

  • Develop trusting, supportive relationships with individual students.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for academic questions or concerns.

  • Work with students through in-person, individual appointments and group meetings, drop-in hours, video conferencing, telephone, and email.

  • Personalize the academic path at CU Denver.

  • Review students’ academic records and discuss appropriate course choices.

  • Offer co-curricular guidance that complements academic path and goals.

  • Lead students in intentional goal setting appropriate to their developmental stage.

  • Proactively track, contact, and work with student populations.

  • Collaborate closely with program faculty to ensure understanding of curricula, program policies, and goals.

  • Assist students with negotiating University and School processes and procedures, including letters and petitions, schedule changes, leaves of absences, academic probation, and services related to special needs, etc.

  • Monitor and track Incomplete grades.  

  • Provide course and program plan information/advising to prospective and current students in all assigned programs, including: pre-requisite advising, transfer of credit, course waiver/substitutions, recommendations for licensure/endorsement, graduation requirements, and degree audit information. 

  • Maintain appropriate documentation of all student contacts via our advising system, Navigate. 

  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistance with disability services, academic and personal issues, and other college-related concerns. 

  • Approves graduation applications and communicates with students about all remaining requirements for successful graduation. 


Retention:
  • Monitor and track student retention and other success benchmarks as needed.


Student Success:
  • Working with the SEHD Student Success Center, identify students in need of academic, financial or social support and connect them to campus resources needed to achieve their goals. 

  • Co-Teach or teach UNIV 1110 Student Success or similar course(s) as requested.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)

Intermediate Level:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, psychology, educational technology, social science, liberal arts, communications, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

  • One or more years of full-time professional-level higher education experience in academic advising or working in a student support services office or position. Note: Twelve (12) months of paraprofessional experience at the graduate level (e.g., graduate assistantship experience) in an academic advising or student affairs office or position may be counted toward the full-time professional-level experience.


Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Master's degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs, Counseling, Education or Human Service-related field. 

  • Five (5) or plus years of experience in academic advising in higher education. 

  • Experience with teacher licensure programs.

  • Experience teaching.

  • Fluent in Spanish, which includes reading, writing, and speaking.

  • Experience with computerized record maintenance and management, preferably using PeopleSoft system and other student information systems.

  • Comfortable with public speaking. 


Conditions of Employment
  • This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at Intermediate Professional: $50,000 - $55,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
