Job Description:

The Economics Department in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts Sciences seeks applicants for an Academic Advisor II.

The Academic Advisor II plays a key role in recruiting, retaining, and enhancing the academic experience of undergraduate students. The Academic Adviser will be responsible for assisting students with navigating institutional policies and procedures, exploring majors and career opportunities, understanding, and fulfilling graduation requirements, and referring students to appropriate campus resources necessary for retention and academic success. This position will assist students with scheduling, registration, degree audits and course selection. The Academic Advisor II will support departmental recruitment activities such as providing information to prospective students and their parents during individual and group visit days; participating in student orientation sessions; ensuring proper placement in courses; and awarding scholarships. The academic Advisor will form and coordinate learning community programs while supervising peer mentors; serve on university, college, and program committees. In addition to the above responsibilities, this position will teach ECON 110 Orientation in Agricultural Business (1 credit course) as well as ECON 292 Career Seminar (1 credit course). The successful candidate may also assist in advising ISU’s Agricultural Business Club. This is an on-site position.

The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving skills. This position will need the ability to interpret a variety of policies and procedures. This person needs to be able to work independently and proactively.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship. 

Example of Duties
• Advises students concerning degree planning, academic support services, academic policy issues, graduation requirements, degree certification, degree auditing, etc.
• Assists students in making personal education decisions and meeting graduation requirements including course selections.
• Refers students to appropriate resources such as counseling, academic success, financial aid, etc.
• Interprets academic policies and procedures to support student success.
• Teaches orientation courses.
• Presents at orientation or other events.
• Participates in recruitment activities and develops materials.
• Advises learning communities.
• Advises student organizations.
• May supervise students.
• May serve as a lead advisor.
Level Guidelines
• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals
• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues
• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems
• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests
• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff
• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity
• Provides guidance to students
