In support of this mission, CPS seeks an outstanding individual to be an Academic Advisor. The Academic Advising team proudly provides services for our diverse, talented, and purpose-driven undergraduate and graduate students, both on-campus and online. Through virtual and face-to-face, individual and group sessions, workshops, and programs, the team empowers students to develop goals, navigate academic programs, and explore their academic and professional fields. CPS’s Academic Advising team develops positive mentoring relationships with our students.
The primary focus of the Academic Advisor, College of Professional Studies is to be the main information hub for students and provide a variety of academic advising and support services. This entry-level position:
  • Assists students with navigating transitions, exploring options, overcoming challenges, and developing academic plans through individual appointments and group sessions.
  • Masters knowledge and understanding of GW rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and academic curriculum, tracks students’ progress, manages records.
  • Collaborates with the CPS admissions/recruitment team and other colleagues and offices through the University.
  • Coordinates and participates in new student orientation, graduation, and other events.
  • Maintains student records from matriculation to graduation; and monitors and responds to student inquiries for transfer credit, leave of absence, and registration. 

Specific Duties Include:
  • Advises students from orientation through graduation.
  • Monitors students’ progress and communicates program requirements and opportunities with them.
  • Connects with students on probation and students with incomplete or missing grades.
  • Audits degree progress and processes degree clearances.
  • Develops or enhances programming and supports relevant student events.
  • Participates in a committee, project, or working group about new student orientation, the student experience, curriculum, graduation, or advising operations.
  • Maintains a positive and constructive demeanor treating all staff, students, faculty, and campus visitors with professionalism, courtesy and respect. 

This position does not typically have direct reports but may schedule, train and supervise temporary staff or student workers. 
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position, including supporting any program within CPS
This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Students and resides on the Foggy Bottom campus in Washington, DC. It will be hybrid meaning some days in the office on campus and some days remote, depending on the needs of the department. 
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Experience in higher education, particularly academic advising, is highly preferred.
  • Ability to understand university policy, explain it to students, faculty, and staff, and apply it to specific situations. Effectively communicates through both written and verbal means, demonstrating strong attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; enjoys working as part of a small, strong team as well as independently to achieve program goals and objectives; able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines in a fast-paced office.
  • Recognizes the challenges students face when dealing with complex academic issues.
  • Proficient in common business and communication apps (e.g. including Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, webex/zoom). Knowledge of, and/or willingness to learn, student information systems and other technology used to track degree progress (e.g., Banner, DegreeWorks, Salesforce, Documentum).
