Organizational Unit Overview
This position reports to the Associate Director of the Academic Advising and Support Center (AASC). The AASC houses advising for: Undecided students, College of Fine Arts and Communication, College of Allied Health Sciences, and Pre-professional.
Job Duties
The Academic Advisor’s primary role is to provide individual advising to undergraduate students. The Advisor works with students to enhance engagement in their major, college, university, and community at large. The position makes personal contact with students; provides guidance about proper procedures regarding all necessary academic forms and use of electronic advising resources; refers students to appropriate university units, learning resources, and personnel; obtains and supplies students with supportive technical information; and meets with students who are in academic difficulty. In addition, the Advisor will help students with course selection, entry into a concentration, registration, and review of records.
The Academic Advisor will serve as a member of the academic advising team. The Academic Advisor works in partnership with undergraduate degree program directors and faculty to ensure that students stay on course with professional requirements throughout their program of study. The Advisor participates in professional development opportunities, teaches freshman seminars, and serves on university committees. The Advisor participates in university events and recruitment activities such as Open House and new student orientations. The Advisor is also responsible for recommending and implementing new and improved programs and systems to improve student retention and persistence to graduation.
Key Responsibilities
Advisors in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (CFAC) provide one-on-one advising for students from freshman year through graduation. This requires intentional contact with students at-risk. The Advisors for CFAC also work directly with their schools on recruitment and retention efforts. Advisors assist with enrollment management and constantly review the course schedules and wait list to determine which classes are under-enrolled and which classes need additional seats or sections. Advisors also work closely with Directors and Associate Directors on curriculum revisions and ensuring curriculum is accurate in Acalog and pulling correctly into Banner and Degree Works. Advisors work closely with the various Living and Learning communities within the college and assist with recruiting and enrolling students into the appropriate LLC classes as well as programing

-Manage an active student advising caseload up to 300 students in the College of Fine Arts and Communication.
-Maintain and uphold university policies and expectation of professional advising.
-Utilize precise record keeping regarding student advising caseload.
Project Management/Leadership- 15
-Manage special projects and advising initiatives independently as assigned by immediate supervisor.
-Monitor and report activities related to position regarding student course plans, course needs and projections.
-Actively participate on committees including advisory and departmental/programs.
Recruitment/Retention – 15
-Assist Academic Advising with recruitment and outreach projects related to enrollment initiatives.
-Assist with recruitment efforts such as Pirates Aboard, Open House, Pirates in Your Town, Pirate Promise, freshman orientation and transfer orientation.
-Provide information regarding program specific outreach and needs.
This position is contingent upon available funding.
Minimum Education/Experience
This position requires a master’s degree received from an appropriately accredited institution and conferred by the time of hire.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
The following criteria are preferred for this position: Teaching, advising, and/or counseling experience in higher education; knowledge of college student development; and strong interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and customer service skills. Strong computer skills and should enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
