The College of Applied Science & Technology (CAST) at the University of Arizona is accepting applications for an Academic Advising Professional II for undergraduate programs in CAST. The position will be part of the CAST Student Services team and serve as frontline contact for undergraduate students for developmental academic advising. The position will play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention, academic goals, and successful degree completion. They will build formative relationships with students by interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of CAST undergraduate programs. Academic Advisors assist students in successfully integrating into the institution's environment and thriving personally and academically. They also have the authority to approve students' academic degree programs, including evaluating transfer credit and making exceptions to the program requirements, in collaboration with appropriate faculty. This position will be housed on the University of Arizona’s main campus to serve CAST students attending classes on the main campus and is subject to change based on the needs of the college.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide advising and academic support for undergraduate freshmen, transfer, and readmitted students across several campuses including Main, Online, and South to ensure successful degree completion.
  • Maintain, interpret, and communicate extensive institutional knowledge and expertise of academic undergraduate policies and degree requirements.
  • Determine students’ development and promotion of their growth by connecting students to suitable resources, academic schedules, support services, and providing guidance on establishing realistic and attainable academic goals.
  • Work closely with the CAST Student Services, as a cross-college team to offer optimal student services that proactively address students’ concerns (academic anxieties, career planning, student engagement, persistence, financial planning, and referrals to university resources).
  • Evaluate use of transfer credit and military credit and determine whether degree requirements have been met.
  • Support students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and professional goals.
  • Assist undergraduate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses and developing schedules.
    Identifies opportunities appropriate students and assists students with selecting options and outcomes.
  • Monitors students’ academic progress, determines satisfactory progress toward programs, and ensures degree requirements are met.
  • Identifies current and potential academic needs, resources, and/or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring).
  • Advises students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan and agreement and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed.
  • Approve and certify programs of study for fulfillment of graduation requirements; approve and verify proposed changes to programs and assist students in their completion; determine if all requirements have been met.
  • Maintain student records, files, and advisor notes. Ensures the accurate and timely documentation of all pertinent student information and update computerized information systems regarding changes to student status.
  • Provide evidence and data-based input that could impact Student Services programming and/or initiatives to college leaders and colleagues.
  • Provide comprehensive orientation experience to new students in a variety of formats.
  • Collaborate with academic advising and student services colleagues at different community college and military serving institutions to facilitate and improve transfer student processes.
  • Coordinate with Academic Advisors and Student Services staff across the University to stay current with advising policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with faculty, Student Services staff, and advising leadership on course availability, rotations, and transfer evaluations.
  • Provide general assistance and information to students, stakeholders, departments, and the general public.
  • Correspond with prospective undergraduate students regarding transferability of coursework, time to completion, and financial aid.
  • Contribute to the development of web, print, and other student outreach materials.
  • Provide walk in advising to students on Main campus.
  • Attend events as needed.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in applying principles, theories, and concepts relevant to the job. Exhibits competence in all job tasks and possesses a broad understanding of industry practices, techniques, and standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience advising Main Campus students at the University of Arizona.
