About the Department

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago is a dynamic and stimulating place to work. We strive for the highest level of complex care for children from diagnosis and treatment; provide outstanding education and training for students, postgraduate scholars, and physicians; and nurture the research of Department scholars who seek to elucidate the causes of pediatric disease and identify promising new therapies. In addition to our provision of clinical care at UChicago Medicine (UCM) Comer Children’s Hospital and at our regional sites, we are currently expanding our clinical care across Northern Illinois and Northwestern Indiana. In collaboration with our partners in the Chicagoland Children’s Health Alliance (CCHA; Advocate Children’s Hospital, and NorthShore University Health System). CCHA has responsibility for the care of almost 1 million children. The Department has 6 ambulatory sites and 3 inpatient sites of care across the region with the goal of providing care close to home’ whenever feasible (https://pediatrics.uchicago.edu/). Job Summary:

Under minimal supervision, the Abstractor/Coder II will focus on more complex encounters that may require a deep understanding of a specific specialty, ability to research and reference check problematic coding. This position will act as a collaborator with providers and clinical areas to ensure the medical record accurately reflects the patient's service. They will serve as a mentor for other staff regarding documentation, billing, and coding. An individual within this role will identify and report error patterns, resolve errors or issues associated with coding and billing processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for moderate to highly complex coding within the unit.

  • Code high dollar procedural area and have the ability to provide feedback to physicians on how to improve procedural documentation to ensure to revenue is not missed.

  • Interdepartmental coding education support.

  • Assist with providing education to the team on how to document appropriately.

  • Helps to train and mentor coding staff to effectively perform their job responsibilities following current coding policies and procedures.

  • Assists coders with medical terminology, disease processes and complex techniques.

  • Research and resolution of coding projects as assigned.

  • Support with resolving denials by reviewing payer policies and drafting appeal letters.

  • Notify management of any discrepancies' and collaborates as needed to rectify the account.

Additional Requirements ​​
 

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience working in physician/healthcare billing and physician coding required.

  • Prior experience with electronic billing and medical record systems (i.e. EPIC) required.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certification through AAPC with CPC credential or AHIMA CCS-P credential is required.

  • Specialty certification preferred.

Pay Range:

  • $28.46-$43.29 per hour
