Laboratory Technician I

Job Description:

The main duties of this role involve sorting, pouring out, and dumping out water samples for analysis as part of the LAKEWATCH program.
Assist in the preparation and analysis of other environmental samples for various parameters, such as total phosphorus, nitrate, ammonia, total nitrogen concentrations, pH, hardness, alkalinity, specific conductance, color, chlorophyll, chloride, or other endpoints beneficial to the LAKEWATCH program, using standard methods, Auto Analyzer, and related instruments for the lake watch program. Support the maintenance of laboratory equipment and environment, acquire laboratory and field supplies as requested, and assist the Laboratory Manager with various tasks as required.
Prepare bottles and laboratory glassware for field and lab work by washing them with specialized detergent (Liqui-Nox) tailored for laboratory use. Aid LAKEWATCH volunteers with their samples upon delivery to the lab, provide new sample bottles and filters, and perform other assigned duties as needed. Help clean and maintain laboratory equipment and environment.

Proficiently enter, edit, and manage data from analyses using Excel spreadsheets to uphold Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures for all lab analyses.


Collaborate with and assist in training other OPS staff on proper techniques according to the procedures outlined in the LAKEWATCH Standard Operating Procedures. Assist LAKEWATCH volunteers with their samples that are delivered to the lab and resupply the volunteers with new sample bottles and filters and other duties as assigned. Helps Laboratory Manager with other related tasks as needed.

Other duties assigned by the LAKEWATCH Lab Manager or Director, as needed.


Expected Salary:

$15-$19/hour

Minimum Requirements:

Associate’s degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
