Department Description and Cultural Expectations | UNIVERSITY AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES: South Dakota State University is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university with more than 200 academic programs, an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students, and over $60 million annual research expenditures. South Dakota State University offers a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement that improve the quality of life in South Dakota, the region, the nation, and the world. Its employees embrace the university’s core values of being people-centered, expanding knowledge through creativity, embracing organizational and personal integrity, commitment to diversity of thought, and excellence through continuous improvement. As the outreach arm of our state’s land grant, South Dakota State University, SDSU Extension is able to provide farmers, ranchers, agri-businesses, communities, families, homeowners, residents, and youth with the research-based information they need to succeed. SDSU Extension meets the changing needs of South Dakotans with progressive outreach services, ranging from one-on-one interaction and forums to 24/7 online access through the system’s extension website. SDSU Extension organizes program outreach across four program areas: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Food & Families, Community Vitality, and 4-H Youth Development. South Dakota 4-H is the state’s largest youth development program! With a presence in every county across the state, South Dakota 4-H teaches life skills and content knowledge to young people ages 5 to 18. While every community is different, and so programs may look different depending on the community, our 4-H advisors lead in-school enrichment programs, agri-science experiences and projects, food and consumer projects, natural resource and outdoor education experiences, communication and performing arts projects, develop STEM programs, and support one of the nation’s largest shooting sports and rodeo programs. South Dakota 4-H has something for everyone to be a part of! As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of South Dakota State University is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota. Jackrabbits Athletics competes as an NCAA Division I member with membership in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the Summit League and the Big XII for wrestling. Phillip, SD Community: Phillip is home to a population just shy of 800 residents. Phillip is a small community centrally located between Pierre and Rapid City. While small, Philip is home to manufacturing, the only hospital within 90 miles, a local golf course, a new school, and more. Phillip is also a 30 minute drive to Wall, South Dakota (home of Wall Drug), Badlands National Park, and National Grassland. Haakon County’s seat of government is Phillip. The County is also home to the town of Midland. Kadoka, SD Community: While Kadoka may originate from the Lakota word “Hodoka” meaning hole in the wall, don’t let that scare you away from the Gateway to the Badlands and the self-described “friendliest town along I-90”. Kadoka is home to nearly 550 residents but has a lot to offer compared to its size. The town boast a public library and auditorium, hotels, a golf course, a local distillery, city park and pool, and is located on the eastern edge of Badlands National Park. The town, along with Phillip, is steeped in rodeo culture having its own rodeo grounds. Kadoka is the county seat of Jackson County. The County not only includes Badlands, but also Buffalo Gap National Grassland and the Minuteman Missile National Historical Site. The County is also home to the towns of Belvidere, Cottonwood (home to an SDSU Research Station), and Interior. A large portion of the county also sits on the Pine Ridge Reservation (the area of former Washabaugh County). |
