Job Description:

This position is part of a new multi-investigator project to discover the molecular basis for the probiotic effects of beneficial oral bacteria to help protect teeth from cavity-forming bacteria.

Duties include the following:

  • Bacteria cell culture.
  • Prepare bacteria and perform oral inoculation of mice.
  • Isolate bacteria from oral swabs and extracted lower jaws of mice.
  • Prepare DNA from isolated bacteria and perform qPCR.
  • Prepare upper and lower jaws and determine caries levels on the smooth surface of molar teeth. Embed and slice molar teeth to then determine caries on the rough surface of molar teeth.
  • Coordinate with the vivarium for the housing, feeding and treatments of mice.
  • Perform routine lab procedures such as ordering supplies and mice, arranging equipment repairs and maintenance, maintain freezers and liquid nitrogen Dewar. 
  • Maintain detailed records of work performed and results.
  • Participate in the UF Animal Contact Medical Monitoring Program and UF Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee training requirements. 
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 

The person in this position will work 40 hours per week. The days of the week and times each day can vary depending upon experimental requirements and the person's schedule.  Some periodic weekend hours as dictated by experiments.

Advertised Salary:

$14.00 to $18.00 per hour based on previous relevant experience  

Minimum Requirements:

BA or BS degree in life sciences field of Biotechnology

Preferred Qualifications:

BA or BS degree in Biology, life sciences field or Biotechnology, with additional undergraduate or biological research experience.
