Job Description Summary
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Aquatics and Fitness, the Lifeguard is responsible for protecting the safety and well-being of the Aquatic facility’s patrons. Additional duties involved with daily facility and program operations, pool cleaning and maintenance, and special event supervision will be delegated as needed. The Lifeguard is expected to emphasize pool safety, customer service, program retention and promotion, and to function as a team player.

Job Description
DUTIES AND TASKS:
- Protects the safety of all patrons by preventing accidents and responding to emergencies quickly and efficiently in order to minimize danger to those involved
- Checks the pool area for hazardous conditions upon arrival; reports any concerns to a supervisor immediately.
- Reports in uniform to station when scheduled shift begins
- Ensures the appropriate equipment is at the station including, but not limited to, first aid kit and rescue tube
- Inspects rescue equipment and first aid kit and reports any concerns to a supervisor immediately
- Practices proper rescue and emergency procedures regularly
- Actively guards and scans the pool area at all times; refrains from socializing while guarding
- Conducts self in professional, alert, courteous, and diplomatic manner
- Enforces facility rules in a courteous and firm manner
- Reports persistent problems to a supervisor
- Properly documents all accidents and incidents
- Attends and participates in all staff meeting and trainings
- Maintains current required certifications
- Completes additional duties as assigned by supervisor
- Inspects the facility for cleanliness and cleans as necessary
- Represents the University in a respectable and responsible manner
- Maintains pool cleanliness with minimal supervision
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Skill in swimming
- Ability to maintain calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations
- Ability to give oral instruction in a precise, understandable manner.
- Ability to understand, explain, and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to the aquatic environment.
- Possess good communication skills and ability to provide quality customer service.
- Ability to perform physical tasks with moderate exertion. The employee will frequently be required to walk, sit, kneel, stand, stoop, reach, pull, and push. The ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds may be required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard and First Aid Certification
- Current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification
- Must reflect a positive and team-oriented attitude
- Must be willing to learn about pool usage, proper chemical levels, and other related pool issues.
- Must be willing to work a wide range of hours which can include early morning (6:00 a.m. opening) shifts, special pool events and weekend shifts.
