Veterinary Technician Assistant Manager

Job Description:

In coordination with the VTM will oversee the management and training of the assigned veterinary care technicians. Conducts interviews and provide input for hiring applicants. Will ensure area schedules are maintained, purchase equipment and supplies and ensure services are billed appropriately and timely. Responsible for the direct supervision of assigned staff. Schedules and coordinates all aspects of veterinary care technician staff. Performs periodic performance evaluations along with the VTM. Assists in implementing operating policies and procedures approved by the clinical veterinarians and/or Clinical Team. Assists in the development and implementation of support training for new hires and existing staff. Will be required to keep up to date on SOP’s in Policy Manger. Will be responsible for ensuring that staff is up to date on SOP’s in Policy Manger. Will ensure time entered by assigned staff is correct before approving. Ensure that Leave, Overtime and Weekend/Holiday Change requests are approved in a timely manner.

Provides support for ongoing and new projects to include protocol development estimate building and principal investigator/research lab communications and coordination. Responsible for the development and implementation of procedures for the management of the ACS Surgical Services’ operating rooms, offices, treatment spaces, rodent surgical areas, clinical inventory and equipment, and sterile supply. This position plays an integral role in the planning and evolution of new ACS support processes in collaboration with the clinical veterinarians and Veterinary Technician Manager following strict guidelines from AVMA, USDA, UF EH&S and ACS SOP’s.

Clinical/Special Service Support – Provides oversight of ACS veterinary care technician clinical services. Coordinates and provides treatment to laboratory animals as prescribed by clinical veterinarians. Initiates and supervises existing veterinary nursing methods, including giving injections, administering oral medications, removing sutures, dressing wounds, and other routine veterinary medical procedures. Assigns veterinary care technician staff as needed to maintain and develop health-monitoring schedules and collect diagnostic samples. Provides technical support in other clinical areas of ACS as needed by the clinical veterinarians and Veterinary Technician Manager. This includes weekends and holidays, as needed on a rotating schedule with veterinary care technicians.

Customer Service/Communication – Provides assistance as needed to research partners, clinical veterinarians and other veterinary care staff, husbandry and operations staff and other members of the scientific community in regards to veterinary care and training.

Expected Salary:

$62,640

Minimum Requirements:

Degree from an accredited veterinary technology program; or an associate’s degree and four years of experience as a veterinary technician, including work with research animals.

Preferred Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited veterinary technology program and three years of experience as a veterinary technician working in a research setting. Veterinary Technician National Examination certification (VTNE) is strongly preferred. Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or above by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science is strongly preferred, but will be required within 12 months of hire unless otherwise specified by supervisor. Management experience in a veterinary setting is very strongly preferred. One year as VT2 or equivalent. Needs excellent interpersonal skills and ability to motivate staff. Must have strong customer service skills to provide a fulfilling experience with research partners, staff and peers.
