We are recruiting an enthusiastic and committed educator to join our Widening Participation Mentor team within Undergraduate Medical Education. This successful mentoring program has been running since 2021. This is initially a fixed term appointment for 72 months.

Role Purpose

The Widening Participation Mentor role is to deliver a one- to- one personalised mentor program to medical students who have been admitted through contextualised admissions (widening access). These students have been disadvantaged prior to admission and a program of targeted support during the medical course will contribute to addressing ongoing disadvantages and subsequent differential attainment. Through the formation of a longitudinal mentoring program the specific needs of each student can be identified.

As a positive and inspiring role model the WP Mentor will support the students to set ambitious goals, identify routes to overcome challenges, access new experiences and a gain a deeper understanding of the world of medicine to guide their career trajectory.

Your priorities will include:

  • Provide mentoring to your allocated cohort of WP students across Years 1-4
  • Tailor mentoring strategies to the individual student, monitoring mentees progress and providing or signposting to support if needed
  • Within safeguarding limits, maintain confidentiality in the mentoring relationship and keep appropriate records
  • Work closely with the existing WP Mentor Team and WP lead.
  • Communicate effectively, as needed, with academic and pastoral support teams within the medical school and the main university.

Who we're looking for:

  • GMC registration & Membership of one of the medical Royal Colleges or equivalent
  • Teaching experience and an interest in undergraduate or postgraduate medical education.
  • Experience of mentoring or supporting medical students (or other professional group)
  • Knowledge, skills and commitment to support, encourage and advise their mentee(s) around academic skills, day to day social and personal issues and career development in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
