The Institute for Old Testament Studies and Biblical Archaeology of the Faculty of Protestant Theology has a vacancy for a University Assistant (Prae-Doc, 30h/week) starting April 20, 2024 (or by arrangement) for four years. As a pre-doctoral university assistant, you will join the research team at the Institute of Old Testament Studies and Biblical Archaeology and have the opportunity to write a dissertation. In addition, you will support the team in research, teaching, and administration.

Your future tasks:

  • You work independently on a dissertation in the field of Old Testament studies. We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement (stating the aims and methodology of your dissertation project) within 12-18 months.
  • You teach independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement (approx. 2 hours per week from the 2nd year of employment).
  • You support Univ.-Prof. Dr. Annette Schellenberg in teaching and research.
  • You support Univ.-Prof. Dr. Annette Schellenberg in editing the journal Vetus Testamentum (proofreading articles etc.).
  • You support the team in the administration of the Institute and in the organization of conferences and workshops.
  • You are involved in the Institute's doctoral seminars and in events organized by the Vienna Doctoral School of Theology and Research on Religion (https://www.religionandtransformation.at/ueber-uns/vienna-doctoral-school-of-theology-and-research-on-religion/

This is part of your personality:

  • You have a university degree (Protestant theology, teaching degree in Protestant religion, or the like). The degree certificate must be available by the date of recruitment at the latest.
  • You have good knowledge of Hebrew and a keen interest in Old Testament studies.
  • You are willing to deepen your knowledge and skills in related disciplines such as Ancient Near Eastern Studies or Jewish Studies.
  • You have a good command of German and English.
  • You enjoy writing academic texts.
  • You have computer skills.
  • You work well both independently and in a team.

The duration of the contract is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
