Job description

Applications are invited for the position of Technician (grade 3) in the Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) in the School of Cancer & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine, King’s College London. Reporting to the Rayne Institute Technical Manager in CCC, the post holder will be part of a team of technical staff providing support to the Centre in its laboratory and office spaces in the Rayne Institute and SGDP building on Denmark Hill campus. Our research activities there focus on blood cancers (haemato-oncology) and other blood disorders such as sickle cell anaemia.  

This role is an exciting opportunity to support a large group of academics, research staff and students with a diverse range of scientific interests that encompass disciplines such as cell biology, immunology, and biochemistry. 

The successful candidate should have experience in a laboratory environment, should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work enthusiastically and effectively as part of a team. Training will be provided as necessary. 

The position encompasses a breadth of activities including support for: 

  • Preventative maintenance, service, and repair of a wide range of equipment, including fault finding 
  • Housekeeping and operational tasks, including waste disposal, autoclaving, lab organisation and maintaining inventories for chemicals and assets 
  • Health & safety, including training and induction, maintenance of risk assessments and Standard Operating Procedures, monitoring and compliance, and emergency response 
  • Implementation of environmentally sustainable working practices

The Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) forms part of the School of Cancer & Pharmaceutical Sciences whose mission is improving patient response through fundamental science discovery. The CCC is the academic arm of one of the leading cancer centres in Europe, which brings together world-class clinical services, research, and education. The Centre has identified research priorities working at the clinical / non-clinical interface and across multiple disciplines, such as genomics, imaging, and biology, that will provide solutions for patient care.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.


Key responsibilities
  • Use technical or practical skills and a well-developed working knowledge of technical or scientific practices and procedures acquired through on-the-job experience and/or vocational training  
  • Provide a range of technical support to established service standards and requirements, using accurate record keeping and data analysis skills, interpreting and evaluating data and applying knowledge to new areas as required 
  • Represent the service as agreed by the line manager(s) 
  • Prioritise work, dealing with activities/ enquiries/ incidents as and when they arise, working autonomously without reference to a line manager or supervisor 
  • Build working relationships with School staff, students, and key partners, in order to coordinate activities in a timely and effective manner 
  • Demonstrate and advise staff and students on techniques as appropriate, ensuring the content is understandable to a non-expert, writing and speaking in a clear and precise way 
  • Maintain local facilities and operations ensuring efficient use of resources, installing, monitoring, maintaining and securing technical equipment systems and software and controlling associated stocks/store, equipment and supplies 
  • Resolve problems as they arise and put in place mechanisms to minimise future, foreseeable problems, supporting less experienced colleagues in deciding day-to-day local operational matters to meet agreed objectives 
  • Understand the regulations and university policies governing the facilities, applying safe working practices, where possible and with agreement with the line manager(s) adapting the working environment to reduce the level of hazard 
  • Facilitate an inclusive culture and ethos across the School teams, ensuring that Professional Services staff work in partnership with academic staff in departments/ centres/ institutes and Professional Services colleagues in the Faculty team and functional networks 
  • Create an ethos of collaboration and collegiality, establishing effective communications and relationships, and encouraging staff to work in partnership with colleagues across the university, to eliminate potential barriers, enhance collegiality and develop best practice through actively contributing to King’s initiatives, including professional networks and working 
  • Participate in cross-School/ Faculty/ university projects and initiatives for up to 10% FTE 
  • Engage actively in Continuing Professional Development and training initiatives, in line with the Technician Commitment and Research Concordat for a minimum of 10 days pro rata per year

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria  

  • Minimum level 3 qualification, e.g. A levels, AS levels, International Baccalaureate diploma or other Level 3 qualification, plus work experience in a relevant technical/scientific post OR knowledge and skills gained through work experience in a relevant technical or scientific post 
  • A broad range of technical or practical skills and a well-developed working knowledge of technical/ scientific practices and procedures 
  • Clear communication, orally and in writing, along with strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills 
  • Competent computer skills including Microsoft Office packages 
  • Understanding of Health & Safety regulations governing area of work, particularly relating to laboratory waste disposal 
  • Solutions-focused self-starter, with good planning and organisational skills with an ability to manage competing priorities 
  • Flexible team-worker, a self-starter who is responsive to colleagues 
  • A commitment to an excellent student experience and concern for staff and student wellbeing, along with a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion 
  • Practical experience in working with and maintaining technical equipment 
  • Demonstrable skills in keeping accurate written and electronic work records in relation to service delivery or research activities 
  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience in supervising/advising less experienced colleagues, monitoring and providing feedback on performance 
  • A commitment to career development including professional registration, such as RSciTech and a willingness to learn new techniques 
  • A commitment to improve environmentally sustainable working practices in office and laboratory environments
