The Department of Chemistry at Swansea University is seeking to appoint a Chemistry Technician to work within the Faculty of Science & Engineering (FSE). The role will involve working as part of the Faculty’s Technical, Infrastructure and Environment team, and in collaboration with colleagues from other University Directorates and Professional Services Units, to implement the operational plans associated with their respective environment ensuring alignment and connection to other Faculties, Professional Service Units and overarching strategies and plans to enhance efficiencies and quality.

The Technician (Chemistry) will work closely with Faculty’s staff members, and colleagues within other Professional Services Units/Faculties, to ensure the effective day to day running of their respective environment; inclusive of Faculty specific equipment, consumables and other systems required to deliver the Faculty’s teaching and research endeavours. This will be achieved by engaging with a network of individuals inclusive of the Faculty Technical team, other University staff and suppliers.

The postholder will also be required to maintain, service, calibrate and repair equipment to meet required needs; organize practical materials and prepare practical teaching and research facilities; assist in the delivery of practical sessions in either teaching and/or research environments as required and support demonstrations of instruments, equipment, software and procedures to users as required.

The successful candidate must:

  • Be educated to minimum A Level standard preferably including a Chemistry related subject or Level 4 qualification in a Science related subject and/or evidence of equivalent experience and qualifications commensurate with the roles and responsibilities of the job.
  • Have demonstrable experience of delivering technical support in a technical environment within Chemistry or a closely related field
  • Have demonstrable experience of health and safety processes in a technical environment within Chemistry or a closely related field. E.g., risk assessments, CoSHH assessments, SOPs etc.
  • Be able to prepare complex chemical solutions and materials for Chemistry or closely related experiments and practicals.
  • Preferably have experience in handling and use of cryogenics (e.g., liquid nitrogen, dry ice).
  • Preferably have experience in the use of analytical instrumentation (e.g., GCMS, HPLC, ICP).
