Technical Specialist - Senior Cleanroom Process Engineer

Updated: 23 days ago
Location: Bristol, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 01 May 2024

The role

Applications are invited for the role of Level 2 Technical Specialist. We look for a Senior Cleanroom Process Engineer, to be responsible for the development and maintenance of reliable high voltage compound semiconductor (Ga2O3, GaN, AlGaN, AlN, SiC, diamond, etc) power devices’ process flows, and to provide professional expertise and contribute creative and innovative solutions in device fabrication, including working with outside industry partners. They will be responsible for interpreting and evaluating data from a variety of characterisation systems to optimise process flows and managing concurrent projects, scheduling efficient usage of the appropriate cleanroom equipment.

This post is part of the flagship UKRI Innovation and Knowledge Centre Transforming Net Zero with Ultrawide Bandgap Semiconductor Device Technology (REWIRE) which aims to accelerate the UK’s ambition for net zero by transforming the next generation of high voltage electronic devices using wide/ultra-wide bandgap compound semiconductors. REWIRE will address market needs to drive the transition of technologies from fundamental research at universities towards proof-of-concept, commercialisation, and exploitation.

What will you be doing?

  • Work with key stakeholders (including external partners e.g. industry, academics, researchers and/or students) to provide specialist solutions in the planning, design and fabrication of power electronic semiconductor devices.
  • Operating, servicing, maintenance and calibration of specialist cleanroom equipment, such as electron beam lithography, photolithography, chemical vapour deposition systems, sputter and electron-beam evaporator deposition systems, reactive ion etching systems, wire-bonding and wafer dicing systems.
  • Design and/or adapt processes requiring specialist equipment to provide innovative solutions.
  • Define accurate characterisation methods and provide detailed results, analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Characterisation of electrical devices fabricated in the cleanroom. Analyse results and report conclusions to researchers to assist in process flow optimisation.
  • Diagnose and rectify complex problems to find short and long-term solutions.
  • Provide technical input into specialist purchases, liaising with relevant contacts and suppliers to ensure fit for purpose solutions and cost effectiveness.
  • Writing risk assessments and method statements/standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Training others in specialist techniques, processes and procedures as needed.

You should apply if

Applicants should have relevant formal training or degree, as well as extensive relevant experience and specialist technical skills primarily relating to device fabrication, desirably of power electronic semiconductor devices (i.e. electron beam lithography, photolithography, laser writer, reactive ion etch, atomic layer deposition, sputter coating, ebeam evaporation and characterisation systems, nano/micro fabrication process design and verification). Candidates should possess excellent IT skills and expert knowledge of specialist software, as well as an innovative approach to work, demonstrating ability to devise, review and deliver complex, innovative and timely solutions.

Experience in electrical characterisation systems, design and fabrication of electronic devices using wide/ultra-wide bandgap compound semiconductors and procurement of cleanroom process tools are desirable.
