The post holder will assist the TOUR team and their clinical colleagues at Guy’s Cancer with managing their research portfolio, specifically for the WATER III study – a prospective single-arm post-market clinical trial investigating the performance and safety of a new robotic system for the resection and removal of prostate tissue in patients experiencing lower urinary tract symptoms who are diagnosed with localised prostate cancer.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to contribute positively to a range of administrative activities relating to TOUR research portfolio, ensuring smooth running of the team. The post holder will contribute to the overall operational organisation of TOUR.

The successful applicant will collaborate closely with personnel at the Urology Centre, Guy’s Hospital, to create a secure, comprehensive research platform for our cancer population.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 30 April 2025, with a possibility for an extension.

This is a part-time post – 70% full time equivalent ( 3.5 days a week).

Key responsibilities

  • To have knowledge of appropriate professional practice so that assistance can be provided in the provision of trial/study meetings, study recruitment and follow-up, and support for the management of research grants and accounts. 
  • Identification and recruitment of eligible patients, e.g. by taking part in the multidisciplinary team meetings and clinical activities at Guy’s Hospital.
  • Consenting patients and collecting clinical data
  • Coordinate and arrange follow-up visits for all patients recruited
  • Assessment and entry of clinical data
  • To be aware of the elements of informed consent and demonstrate the ability to obtain written consent from patients. 
  • To assist the data manager in entering collected data and correct data into a specific computerised database.  
  • To provide administrative support to the TOUR team as needed 
  • Manage activities of the TOUR team in line with KCL policy and procedures and with the Standard Operating Procedures of the R&D Department 
  • To participate in inspections of the studies by sponsor auditors, regulatory authorities and others, ensuring key documents are readily available 
  • To ensure all collaborators of the TOUR team are kept abreast of developments. 
  • Facilitate action or problem solving where appropriate. 
  • Collaborate with clinical staff across the Trust.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria  

  • Bachelor degree in cancer field or related 
  • Knowledge of the clinical research process, research governance and GCP guidelines 
  • Highly evolved communication, interpersonal and presentation skills; including written and verbal communication, formal presentations, including to professional / external bodies; dealing with clinical and or sensitive subject matter adjusting style and content to audience appropriately 
  • IT skills with window packages 
  • Ability to prioritise workload and plan ahead 
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Ability to interpret, apply and communicate complex information 
  • Confident handling and communication sometimes politically sensitive or contentious information 
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Be able to be flexible with regard to working hours in order to facilitate collection of specimens 
  • Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of experience working within the administrative network of King’s Health Partners 
  • Evidence of administrative support in clinical cancer research setting

    The Translational Oncology and Urology Research (TOUR) team aims to translate science into better healthcare by translating uro-oncology research into medical practice. TOUR is led by Prof Mieke Van Hemelrijck. The translational work of the group encompasses a heterogeneous set of activities in the area of prostate, bladder, renal, and testicular cancer: epidemiology, bioinformatics, immunology, histopathology, randomized clinical trials, patient care and experience, radiotherapy, etc. However, the TOUR team is also leading Guy’s Cancer Real World Evidence Programme, which focuses on all types of cancer treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

    TOUR brings together a team of researchers, clinicians, students, research nurses, trial coordinators, and database managers who are active across the field of translational research – covering both bed and bench side whilst contributing their own skills and knowledge.

    For this specific project, we will work closely with the Urology team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (Mr Rick Popert).
