Specialist Technician

We are looking for a highly motivated research technician to join our team using zebrafish to investigate the causes of skeletal disease. Recent advances in understanding the interplay between genetics, environmental stimuli such as feeding and mechanical loading and cell behaviors in the skeletal system provide tantalizing clues into why skeletal diseases such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis affect a majority of people over 65. The role will involve supporting postdoctoral research and performing experiments using zebrafish larvae, adults and histological sections to study the cellular basis of skeletal disease and responses to injury.  

This is a highly collaborative project integrating expertise in inflammation, autophagy and genetics with collaborators in other schools at the University of Bristol and at other UK universities. The team science approach will require individuals who think creatively and flourish in collaborative environments.

A degree in a relevant discipline is desirable as is experience using zebrafish. Experience using and maintaining animal models, experience with molecular biology and an ability to work in a highly collaborative team are essential.

  • You will work with key stakeholders, these are academic partners in Bristol (postdocs, PhD students and group leaders) and other institutions (Universities of Liverpool and Cardiff) to plan and design research experiments.
  • Genetic manipulation of zebrafish by injection.
  • Managing zebrafish colonies: making crosses, genotyping, screening for transgenes.
  • Sourcing and maintaining stocks of lab materials and consumables.
  • Gaining expertise and training others in specialist techniques, processes and procedures including zebrafish injury models and imaging.
  • You have a background working with animal models, particularly zebrafish.
  • Experience with molecular cell biology experiments, data handling and analysis.
  • A desire to work as part of a collaborative research team.
