We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Solicitor working within the Research and Commercialisation Contracts Team of Research & Innovation Services (RIS). 


About the role

You will be working within a fast-paced environment in support of the University's ambitious research and enterprise ambitions. You will be working with colleagues at all levels of the University as well as with our external, commercial partners and stakeholders on a range of complex, high-value contractual matters. You will provide legal guidance and oversight for these, ensuring timely communication with stakeholders and co-ordination with faculties and senior academics, in each case ensuring the right balance between timely completion and risk.

You will have an advisory role within the team, and you may manage your own portfolio of contractual matters where and when your legal duties allow. 

This role is offered on a part time (14.6 hour per week) fixed term basis with a duration of 6 months. 


Our ideal candidate will be able to:
  • Provide legal advice and negotiation position/strategy as required on all aspects of University legal activity for research and commercialisation arrangements
  • Advise other members of the team on particular points of law in respect of research (related) contracts/structuring a proposed research collaboration/negotiation strategy
  • Provide legal advice and services to senior colleagues regarding research and policy issues relating to innovation/enterprise and research
  • Ensure timely progression of contractual negotiations, ensuring sensitive and appropriate communication with all stakeholders
  • Manage, mitigate and inform the relevant stakeholders of the risks attendant on their contracts in an appropriate fashion; signposting methods of mitigation or management in line with University policy
  • Undertake and maintain responsibility for a workload of contracts throughout the contracts process, liaising with and undertaking negotiations with and undertaking negotiations with external stakeholders at all levels
  • Deputise for the Head of Team as necessary, including attending meetings inside and outside the University
