Senior Technician: Garment Construction

About The Role
We are seeking a Senior Technician in Garment Construction - Fashion & Costume for Falmouth University’s Fashion & Textiles Institute who is highly skilled in garment construction and related techniques and is passionate about teaching and demonstrating these skills to students on our BA Fashion Design and BA Costume Design for Film and Television courses.
 
You will primarily create and deliver induction workshops, develop learning resources, supervise, and provide technical support for students in garment construction.  Other responsibilities will include communicating with stakeholders, timetabling, scheduling, supporting for online booking of resources, acting as an effective point of contact, and ensuring access to up-to-date and accurate information for students, academics, fellow technicians, and other university staff.
 
You will carry out basic machine maintenance tasks and troubleshooting across a wide range of commonly used construction machinery within the department. You will be an integral part of the course teams, contributing your experience in garment construction to the development of the curriculum and have the opportunity to develop new skills and experience across a wide range of technical workshops.

About You
We are looking for someone who has specific professional experience and excellent working knowledge of a wide range of relevant construction practices that supports an industry led curriculum centred around contemporary practices in garment construction. You will have had experience within the fashion and costume garment construction industry, ranging from technical assembly, pre-production sample Q&A and the production of technical packs.
 
To be successful in this role you will have demonstrable understanding and knowledge of a wide range of industrial machinery, machining techniques, and settings for working with woven and stretch materials. An industry level knowledge of engineering techniques required for woven and stretch garments incorporating soft tailoring, activewear and outdoor clothing is essential.  You have a competent/expert level of pattern cutting skills that will be used for developing workshop patterns, technical resources and for construction help and advice to students. 
 
We are looking to hear from candidates who have the following skills/experience: 
 
  • Recent experience of curriculum support and assessment of technical aspects in a relevant subject.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of machining techniques, specific to Fashion, Sportswear and Costume construction. Industry level knowledge and engineering techniques required for woven and stretch incorporating soft tailoring, active wear and outdoor clothing is key.
  • An up to date knowledge of related technical practice and a commitment to continual specialist development.
  • Ability to service and maintain technical facilities, equipment and processes.
