Senior Technician - Audio

University of Reading Technical Services and the School of Arts Communication Design are seeking an experienced technician to join our existing team, and enhance our existing portfolio of skills by acting as a specialist in sound production and design. 

Working for Technical Services and located within the department of Film, Theatre & Television (FTT) your primary role will be to provide technical support for teaching activities associated with the BFI Skills Cluster, Screen Berkshire and FTT, as well as other groups if required. 

This will typically involve the recording, editing and mixing of audio media, training and advising students and staff on relevant hardware, software and techniques necessary for the completion of their own projects, and liaising with artists and educators to plan out activities and skills workshops beneficial to students and other trainees. 

This is an exciting opportunity to work with students and staff, as they develop ideas and plans for projects and develop their artistic skills. You will provide practical guidance and advice on how best to approach and produce professional-level sounds assets, and integrate them with other recorded media. This will include running group workshops, as well as providing individual support and guidance. The applicant will be expected to supervise and guide other technical staff not at the senior grade, whose specialisms may be in other disciplines and media. 

The successful candidate will have an extensive background of recording and manipulating sound, with experience in industry or education. 

Technical Services aims wherever possible to recruit a multi-skilled team, to best serve FTT, the wider University and partners as required. To this end, additional skills in related fields, such as video editing, operation of cameras and experience working in studios and theatres, is highly desirable. 

You will also be expected to develop positive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues in all areas of the University and to conduct yourself as a professional at all times. You will share your skills with

other members of technical staff and contribute, for instance,  towards our aims of ensuring a good level of practical skill across the whole team. 

You will have:

  • A background in sound recording, design and editing
  • Skill level equivalent to HND, NVQ4, degree, or significant relevant experience.
  • Significant experience of acquired in industry or education
  • A knowledge of the risks associated with the use of the equipment relevant to the role
  • The ability to work independently or under direct supervision, to lead and influence others, to deliver results against deadlines and devise innovative and creative solutions to solve complex problems.
  • A passion for working with filmmakers to support them in bringing their ideas to life 

This is a fixed-term position ending on 31st March 2026.
