Job Summary

The National Heart and Lung Institute is seeking to appoint a Senior Teaching Fellow for the MSc/ PGDip/ PGCert Genomic Medicine for a one-year maternity cover post. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a keen interest in postgraduate teaching to work within a Department offering high quality competitive postgraduate taught programmes. The post would be ideal for a Teaching Fellow to gain experience at the Senior Teaching Fellow at Learning and Teaching Level 4. The Genomic Medicine Senior Teaching Fellow role involves the development of active learning and teaching across topics within genomic medicine. You will have the opportunity, where appropriate, to lead on specific modules consistent with subject expertise, develop and deliver authentic assessments, as well as play a key role in cohort building, the recruitment and selection of students applying to the programme. This role involves a significant administration component to coordinate assessments, marking and exam board preparation and is supported by an experience education administrator within the Education Team. 

The National Heart and Lung Institute’s (NHLI) main aims are to carry out research and education in Cardiovascular and Respiratory basic and clinical science. NHLI is committed to the development and delivery of excellent education and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. NHLI’s education team is responsible for implementing, administering and supporting the Institute’s education and outreach activities, undertaken in line with the College’s strategy for education. 

Duties and responsibilities

You will support an excellent student experience and help NHLI’s academic and teaching staff to deliver a world-class education in Genomic Medicine through responsibilities including:

  • Day to day guidance and support to the Module Leaders
  • Overseeing the continuing evolution of a distance learning environment for the programme, including virtual patient journeys and new e-learning tools for Genomic Medicine
  • Act as module lead on two modules; Fundamentals of Human Genetics and Genomics and Ethical, Legal and Social Issues in Applied Genomics
  • Academic liaison with programme partners (Institute of Cancer Research, Brunel)
  • Educational liaison with the other Genomic Medicine MSc providers in the HEE network
  • Development of marking criteria and assessment processes across all modules and research projects

Essential requirements

  • The successful candidate will hold a BSc in genetics, genomics or other related subject, as well as teaching experience in a Higher Education setting
  • A PhD in human genetics or genomics is desirable
  • You must be able to work well within a team environment, have enthusiasm for teaching and be willing to learn new skills to support education
  • The successful candidate must be adaptable and keen to drive the development of the programme and students
