The Role and Department
The Strategy Delivery Unit, part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, is focussed on co-ordinating and facilitating the implementation of the University’s ambitious strategic plans. The Portfolio Management Office (PMO) sits within this unit and its purpose is to ensure that the University’s investment in change is aligned to its strategy whilst defining and maintaining the standards of programme and project management.
The purpose of the role is to manage the work programme of the PMO and proactively develop services to support the effective delivery of the University’s programmes and projects.
The role will be a critical part of the PMO team supporting assurance, capability development and delivery of project outcomes. It will provide an integrated approach to identifying, prioritising and delivering change working closely with project and change teams across the University to drive real and rapid improvements.
The post-holder will provide hands-on support and advice as well as the development of methodologies and tools.
This is a full-time (35 hours per week) fixed term maternity cover.
The successful candidate will have a good understanding of the theory of project and change methodologies and techniques, but even greater practical experience and know-how to make it happen in reality. They will be able to build trusted relationships with teams across the university; will be a good communicator – able to facilitate discussions, and challenge where appropriate; and will be tenacious and pragmatic. They will have experience of delivering change in complex environments or building change capability in others. Plus, they will be excited about - and motivated by – Durham University’s ambition and the opportunity to play a key part in making it happen.

- Responsible for operational activity across the PMO.
- Oversight of short term or temporary project teams, taking responsibility for decision making as appropriate.
- Lead on the design, implementation and monitoring of policy and quality standards, procedures and systems ensuring effective working and continuous improvement in project and programme management.
- Ensure all activities, processes and transactions are accounted for accurately and promptly to meet regulatory and professional service and policy standards.
- Produce communications for promotion and reporting purposes, designing and structuring information and fact, applying creative and innovative principles to influence and engage.
