The Dickson Poon School of Law is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer or Reader in Tax Law who will contribute to the teaching, research and other academic and professional activities at the Dickson Poon School of Law.

The successful candidate’s principal teaching contribution will be Tax Law in our undergraduate and postgraduate online and on campus programmes, primarily on the International Tax Law postgraduate programmes

The successful candidate's will be actively involved in the administration and academic life of a world leading law school, and will carry out administrative duties in the Dickson Poon School of Law.

The successful candidate will be responsible to the Executive Dean.

The Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College London is one of the oldest law schools in England and recognised globally as one of the best law schools in the world. The Dickson Poon School of Law is housed in the East Wing of Somerset House, a Grade One listed building, on the College’s Strand Campus, no more than a few minutes’ walk from the Royal Courts of Justice and Inns of Court.  We are located midway between Westminster and the City of London, enabling us to have excellent contacts with practitioners and policy-makers. There is a strong tradition of engagement with the legal profession.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract (subject to a probation period).

This is a full-time post.

• To take a key role in planning, organising and delivering tax law on online and on campus programmes.
• To undertake high quality research relevant to UK, EU and international tax law.
• To act as module coordinator for one or more of the courses and supervise LLM dissertations.
• To be prepared to lead the development of new, innovative programmes in law, including online courses.
• To show strong commitment in all aspects of teaching and research to the exploration of how multiple specialist fields of private and public law, international and EU law apply and interact with tax law.
• To carry out administrative duties as requested by the Executive Dean.
• Contribute to the holistic development of our students through pastoral care and engagement in student experience activities, including by acting as a personal tutor.
• Participate in student development processes, including student progress monitoring, education assessment and examination.
• Undertake marking duties during assessment periods.
• Be responsible for marking formative and summative work and to provide timely and effective feedback working closely with module leaders and programme directors and the professional services programme and assessments team.
• Accept leadership and administrative responsibilities, such as in School education or research roles, and in School or university governance structures, as commensurate with the candidate’s seniority and experience.
• Engage in professional development to further the post-holder’s career.

Essential criteria

1.       PhD in Law, or equivalent experience

2.       Strong publication record in Tax Law

3.       A commitment to, and interest in the areas of Tax Law as the primary focus of the candidate’s teaching and track record of excellent teaching of the subject

4.       For Senior Lecturer, a track record of attracting research funding and/or research impact. For Reader, a substantial record of attracting funding for research and/or research impact.

5.       Excellent oral and written communication skills

6.       Competence with electronic learning platforms and other IT skills

7.       Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships

8.       Ability to work to and meet deadlines

9.       Ability to work both on one’s own initiative and as part of a team and a track record of collegiality

10.    Willingness to contribute to the School’s culture of collaboration

Desirable criteria

1.       Professional experience in legal practice, especially EU or International Tax Law

2.       Teaching experience and expertise in areas other than Tax Law

3.       Experience of module leadership and teaching innovation

4.       For Senior Lecturer, experience of successfully undertaking administrative roles. For Reader, experience of undertaking academic leadership and administrative roles.

5.       Senior teaching award e.g., Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE)

Reader (Grade R1 to R5) £64,421 -  £71,857 per annum, including London Weighting Allowance

The selection process will include a panel interview and a research presentation.

Interviews are expected to take place in w/c 6th or 13th May 2024
